Chapter one starts off fairly quickly on the characters and so far I think I have the best idea of three people, Kino, Juana and the doctor. It seems like Juana and Kino love each other, but that Kino doesn't really respect Juana the way people respect their partner nowadays. Its sort of like she's just there, in a way, forcing her to be independent. Kino seems to be very stubborn and kind of bitter, but I think he has good reason. It seems like maybe something happened to him in the past. The doctor, on the otherhand, just seems like a jerk, to be honest. He refers to Coyotito as an animal saying he shouldn't treat him because he is not a veterinary. I dislike his greedy character so far.

This chapter touches on the main characters: Juana, Kino, Coyotito, and other minor characters. It also gives you an introduction on the role this characters play in society. Finally, it touches on the first conflict of the story; a scorpion stings Coyotito. The doctor is greedy and selfish and does not help this poor people and their child. In exchange, he asks for money something that Kino and his family don’t have. The doctor lies not accepting the humble pearls Kino offers instead of money. I predict there is going to be many injustices, but the greedy people will finally pay when the time is right. The book seems interesting because of the sad experience this family is going through.

Evaluate: In chapter one we meet 3 of the main characters in the book "The Pearl". It identifies the lifestyles of Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. One of the things I noticed in this chapter is the lifestyle of the village that Kino & Juana live in. The people don't seem very neighborly compared to neighbors nowadays. If a child was stung in a modern neighborhood, a majority of the neighborhood would be trying to help and asking what to do to help while in the story, this doesn't happen, the people whispers amongst themselves and notice from a distance. Another example is the relationship between Kino and Juana. A modern couple today enjoy breakfast together and can carry a conversation, while in the story Kino and Juana eat separately and don't speak a word unless it involved the conflict, but even then it was small talk.

In chapter one the story starts out with Kino the father waking up before morning checking on his son and his wife Juana. After checking on them he goes outside and is listening to the family song. Then he goes back inside his house, seeing a scorpion fall into his baby’s crib, it stung the baby before he can kill it. After his baby is stung he crushes the scorpion in his hand and steps on it and his wife sucks the poison out of Coyotito. As the baby cry’s all their neighbors comes and surrounds their house. They then take Coyotito to the town’s doctor’s house, but the doctor an unusual one dislikes Kino’s people and always wants something in return. Kino after checking his pocket for some money still didn’t have enough to please the doctor and the doctor’s patron lies to Kino and punches the doctor’s gate.

Chapter one of The Pearl, beings with the father, waking up and looking at his son, Coyotito and his wife Juana. He hears the waves and remembers about a song that he would have named the family song. During breakfast Kino and Juana noticed the scorpion climbing down the rope, Coyotito shook the rope and it fell on him, stinging him. Kino grabbed the scorpion and crushed it, throwing it to the ground and punching it. Juana soon started to suck on the spot where the scorpion had stung, the scream of the baby had woken the neighbors and brought them to their house. Juana then suggest that they go to the doctors. While at the doctors Kino struggles to knock on the door knowing that he would be angry at the doctor because he knew that the doctor hated his kind. Kino told the servant the situation and the servant reported back to the doctor telling him of Kino and the baby. The doctor told the servant to ask if Kino had any money. Kino handed the servant a folded paper, and as soon as the servant went back into the house, a few seconds later he came out saying that the doctor isn’t home. The crowd soon departed, then Kino slowly put on his hat and struck the gate.

The story began with the three characters: Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. They were peasants living in the poor part of town. They were sleeping in a mat, and when they woke up, Juana started making breakfast. Kino went outside and came back once Juana had finish making breakfast. Once they were finished, Kino saw that there was a scorpion coming towards Coyotito’s crib and he headed towards his son to save him. Coyotito shook the rope that had the scorpion and the scorpion fell on Coyotito’s shoulder and stung him. The commotion brought the neighbors and caused Juana and Kino to take their baby to the doctor on the rich part of town. When they arrived at the doctor’s house, the doctor’s servant let them inside the house and told the doctor the problem. The doctor was so greedy that he didn’t cure Coyotito because his parents didn’t have the money to pay. When Juana and Kino left, Kino punched the fence due to his anger towards the doctor.

In the first chapter, Coyotito is stung by a scorpion. He is taken to see the doctor who doesn’t care for the Indians. When Kino gets to he gate of the doctors the reader can read about Kino’s personal feelings towards the doctor. For example, Kino thinks about how the doctor dislikes his people. He thinks about how much easier it would be to hurt the doctor rather than trying to talk to him. This made me think about what might happen in the future. My first thought was that an event was going to occur that would make Kino blow his top. Maybe the doctor will continue making rude comments about the Indians and this will make Kino mad. This makes me think that throughout the rest of the story, Kino will hold a grudge against the doctor since he refused to help save Coyotito.

In chapter one Kino, who is married to Juana and father of Coyotito, wakes up in his brush house. Juana is also awake and gets up to start a fire while she tends to Coyotito. Kino sits outside for a little bit, then goes back inside and has breakfast that consists of only a corncake dipped in sauce and some pulque. After putting Coyotito in his hanging box, Juana eats her breakfast as well. Not long after a scorpion starts climbing down the rope attached to Coyotito's hanging box. Kino tries to prevent the scorpion from getting any closer, but it slips through his fingers and lands on the baby, stinging him. As Juana is trying to suck as much venom she can from Coyotito's shoulder, the neighbors start crowding around to see what is happening. Juana then concludes that they need to go to the doctor, but the doctor feels as if he is too good to tend to "little Indians."

In chapter one, Kino awakes next to his wife Juana. This morning was the same as any. His wife's stare, the music of the waves, and the ants. He has been through this repeating morning many times, enough so that he could be able to tell what was going on around him without the need of seeing it being done. A scorpion was climbing down the rope to Coyotito and then Juana repeated and ancient magic to ward off the evil. Kino tried to grab the scorpion but it had fell onto Coyotito's shoulder and stung it before it got caught by Kino.

In Chapter One, we are introduced to Kino, the father, Juana, the wife, and Coyotito, the baby. The chapter begins when Kino first wakes up to Juana, and they begin their day. I’m not entirely sure how connected and in love Kino and Juana are, it seems like a forced marriage. Kino seems like a powerful man, who knows what he is doing; I feel his role is literally the man of the house. Juana seems very quiet ad put in her place; she is a very caring mother and wife. We learn that Kino and his family aren’t the richest people, in fact, they are very poor. Everything in this chapter seemed to be calm until the scorpion scene, which eventually answers the social class question. We also find out that the Native Americans are segregated from the richer parts of the lands. In this chapter we find that Kino has a song for every moment. My question is; why do you think he has a song for everything?

During chapter one Kino’s son Coyotito was bit by a scorpion. The did not want to see to the baby because Kino is poor and cannot pay for treatment. Based on the description of the book Kino will find a great pearl worth a lot of money. The doctor will find out about Kino’s great fortune, be greedy and act like he really cares about the family, not just the money they found. The doctor will help with the scorpion bite and will want money in return. Kino will offer him the pearls he offered him when they first asked for his help. The doctor will be greedy and want more money.

In this chapter we were introduced to the family, Kino, Juana and Coyotito. They are Indian and live in a small village just outside of a city. Kino’s people used to be great makers of songs, but they are not any more. Coyotito is stung by a scorpion and might die, so Kino and Juana take him to the doctor in the city. The doctor is a cruel man though, and turns them away because they do not have any money for the treatment. This angers Kino, but he can do nothing about it.

Chapter 1: It began with Kino the husband, Coyotito the child, and Juana the wife. Kino had just wakened up, he looked at the hanging box which was Coyotito’s bed then glanced at Juana who was laying beside him on a mat. By this time Juana was awake so Kino went back to bed. Shortly after Juana got up to start a fire and now Kino got up and went outside. He could hear “the world waking up” and a song came to him. By now he could hear and imagine what was happening inside. Juana took Coyotito and cleaned him up carried him a while and then Kino came in and she put him back. So Kino and Juana were having breakfast when they saw a streak of light shine down on one of Coyotitos ropes on his crib. They looked up to see that there was a scorpion climbing down the rope they were frozen just then the scorpion was on the move and so was Kino. When Kino was close enough the scorpion stopped then Coyotito pulled on the rope and Kino tried to get it but it was to late it had struck Coyotitos shoulder. Coyotito screamed by now all of the neighbors were at their house they asked for a doctor but the doctor would not come so they went to him. When they got there they asked to see the doctor but he turned them down so everyone was disappointed but Kino was not satisfied with a no he broke the gait open with his fist.

In chapter one, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito were awakening. Kino woke up but went back to sleep after he saw Juana already awake. Juana was holding Coyotito in her arms and when her husband Kino came in she put Coyotito back into his bed. Coyotito’s bed was actually a box that was hanging by a couple of ropes. Juana and Kino began to eat breakfast and something caught their eye. They saw a scorpion on one of the ropes coming towards Coyotito. They were sacred and they didn’t know what to do. Kino wanted to remove the scorpion but Coyotito shook the rope and the scorpion fell on him and stung him. He began to cry and they decided to take Coyotito to the docter’s. Kino didn’t feel comfortable about this. The doctor was a different race then kino. Their races had conflicts in the past and that made him feel angry and scared. The doctor was very cruel and even referred to Kino’s race as animals. Kino was no satisfied on how he was treated and he took all of his anger out on the gate.

Evaluate: In chapter one the characters of the book are introduced to the reader and the problem is presented. Some things that I noticed while I was reading was that the characters all seemed very into their spiritual lives together as they came into the day as any other. They hardly talked as Kino was in tune with all the songs that he has been hearing all throughout his life. When the conflict comes into date the characters seem very interested in the fact that something exciting and riveting has come to their regular daily lives. Coyotito was bitten by a scorpion that shook the whole neighborhood with fear and worry for the families only, and first, son. The village seemed very connected to each other because of their interest and devotion to one child in their lives. As they all walked to the doctors house together they seemed one, as a family.

The scorpion stings the baby, Coyotito. The baby then screamed, this awoke all the neighbors and brought then to the house. Juana then asks the people to get the doctor, the doctor denied the offer. Then she went to go to the doctor’s house to see if he would treat the baby there. At the gate of the doctor’s house Kino and his wife were not allowed in. The doctor refused to see the baby. He did this because they didn’t have any money.

Evaluate: In chapter one, the reader is introduced to a few characters. Kino, Juana, Coyotito, and the doctor. While I read, I noticed a few things that were unusual to me. The first thing is that the people in the village don’t really care about others unless it evolves around a conflict. This fact seemed a little weird to me because in modern day, neighbors are friendly and talk to others around them. Another thing I noticed was that the doctor didn’t treat Kino’s family fairly. The reason why the doctor didn’t speak to them or even help them with their injured baby was because of their skin color. This is called racism. I don’t believe in racism. In my opinion, people are treated equal and not judge upon their skin color. This chapter is an opening chapter and helps me understand a little of how the story will go.

PREDICT:

Chapter one starts off relatively quickly, so it was kind of hard for me to grasp who the characters were. The three main characters i was introduced to were Juana and Kino who are married and have a little baby named Coyotito. There relationship didn't seem normal to me at all, because they don't speak to each other. This could be because both might of been raised this way, with parents that didn't talk to one another. It also could possibly be a tradition in there culture for married couples not to talk to one another. I also realized that they don't have much money. When Coyotito get's stung by the scorpion, and Kino goes to the doctor, the doctor shuts the gate on his face. The doctor knows that Indians are poor, and Kino only has a few seed pearls worth very little. When this happens, the neighbors leave. I can also infer that Kino's neighbors aren't very kind, because in a normal community nowadays, neighbors help one another out.

The characters in chapter one are quite strange. Each character immediately show their personalities. The doctor seems to represent the arrogance, condescension, and greed at the heart of colonial society. We are quickly introduced to three main characters. Kino is the protagonist of the story, his wife Juana is a very spirtual lady, and Coyotito is their first child. Kino and his people are neglected only because of what they are and what they do. They dont have money and live in small houses. They don't really look foward to anything and nothing amusing occurs within their lives. When Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion, it becomes something shocking towards the people and gather around to see what has happened. There really isn't no conversation between anyone and everyone seems isolated with no dreams nor hopes towards their future.

At the beginning of the story i believe that the author began to plot out the main points of the chapter in the first couple sentences. to me that is very to fast. i think that the author should of introduced the characters one at a time and their character traits. The four main characters that the author introduces are kino, Juana. the Dr.. and Coyotito. As the author talks about Juana, and Kino kind of seem like they have something for each other but, Kino doesn't seem so nice. Another character that isn't nice is the doctor. the doctorr because he calls Coyotito an animal even though he isn't one.

I love the way Steinbeck describes the characters in chapter one. The characters personalities are conveyed indirectly through their actions. I see Kino as a serene man; a man who takes time to notice details and appreciate the beauty of all things. My perception of Juana is that she is calm, just like her husband. She keeps to herself, but is really a strong woman. Kino and Juana love each other and they know it. They are familiar with it; they know their love is present, but they do not feel the need to acknowledge it because they trust that it is there.

Well in the first chapter it started off by describing the characters. Kino,Juana, and the little baby. It describes how their lives are and how hard it is to live like they live. It also gave ahint tohow the doctor was. To me he seemes very selfish and was only willing to work or cure people for money,no matter their situation. Well as the story went on it says how a scorpion had fallen on the babys crib. Both the parents were very careful to not move because they knew he would hurt the baby. Well the scorpion did bite the baby on the shoulder and the doctor did not want to cure him because they had no money.

Chapter one introduces the characters Kino, Juana, Coyotio and their neighbors. Kino is Coyotito’s father and Juana is Coyotito’s mother. The chapter starts with Kino waking up and checking on his family. They then go on to their usual task until Coyotito, the baby, gets stung by a local threat, the scorpion. This situation causes the neighborhood to become awake and alert. Because of the neighborhood is out to help it shows that Kino, Juana, and Coyotito live in an area where everyone is close and supporting. After the baby is stung Kino and Juana takes Coyotito to the doctor, who oddly hates Kino’s people. The doctor demands money in order to heal Coyotito, but Coyotito coming from a family with little money is unable to satisfy the doctor and is there for rejected.

The author describes the characters fairly well in chapter one. He gives a great description of them. So Far there are three characters. Kino, which I believe is the main character. Juana, which It seems so far that she and Kino are in love. The last character is the doctor. The Author only gives him the name of doctor. No others so far. This Character seems to be cruel and greedy. Maybe he is this way due to how he was raised..or something that happened in his past.

The book starts off fairly slow, but I have a good understanding of the characters now. I think the doctor is a jerk and he shouldn't be treating them like that just because they had no money, and all they had were pearls. I think that Kino doesn't treat Juana as well as he should. I feel that he just married her because he had to. And I think he loves the baby more than his wife because it is a boy. I thought that it was terrible to see the little boy come so close to death by the scorpion. The living conditions that they have aren't so well because they hardly have a job; it's only to be a pearl gatherer.

Chapter 1 starts off slowly with Kino, Juana, and their son Coyotito in their home. The first chapter focuses in on how people were divided into different classes. Kino and his family are in the lower class that live away from the city. On the other hand the doctor and many other people are sophisticated with money and such and live within the walls of the city. These different rolls in society play up when Coyotito is stung by a scorpion and desperately needs a doctor or it could result in his death. The doctor turns down their plea for help for their son simply because Kino's pearl was not worth enough. He also refers to them as animals. I dislike this mans' attitude toward other people not as wealthy as him.

In chapter1 it starts off describing when Kino woke up and describing their house. Then it goes into how their ancestors’ made up songs for everything. That everything he heard, saw, smelt, and felt could be turned into a song that it was in their blood. Then after that it just seems like it will be a normal day for the family till the baby coyotito gets stung by a scorpion. Kino is furious. He crushes the thing to dust. But his wife Juana acts completely different. She tries to suck out the poison she thinks she got it all out but this is her first child so she’s terrified. She asks to go to the doctor. When they get to the doctor Kino is mad because the doctor’s race is almost like a bully to their kind. It shows he is when he refers to them as Indian people and turns them down for not having money to pay him.

In order to make money he has to go out to sea and dive for pearls. One day Kino’s son gets stung by a scorpion. His wife tries to suck out all of the venom but, the bite still starts to swell up. Hearing the baby crying, all of his neighbors come to see what all the commotion is about. Juana didn’t want her baby to die so she and Kino carried it to the doctor. Although the doctor was cruel and wouldn’t help them because they were poor she still insisted on trying. They got there and asked the doctor for help. He refused even after they offered to pay with small misshapen pearls. Kino was so furious that he punched the doctor’s fence and split his knuckle.

Chapter one is pretty basic and the characters aren't really described very well. They have basic descriptions but i made some predictions on how I think the characters are. I think Kino loves his wife and family but doesn't show it very much. His wife, Juana is a kind loving women. The doctor is cruel and doesn't help anyone unless they have money. I also think that Kino and his family feel very discriminated and probably also feel like animals by how they are treated. I think that Kino and his family are going to try to get back at the doctor or something will result in him getting fair treatment.

He gets bit by a scorpion and is in grave danger because the poison can kill him easily. This then leads to these three going into the rich village and getting the docter to treat and mybe save their baby. Chapter One takes place in a small village somewhere off the Gulf of Mexico. Dawn is appearing in the sky and Kino, one of the main characters in “The Pearl” awakens from the rising light. As he gets his wife Juana, already awake, joins him and begins a daily morning routine in their hut. Kino went outside and took in the morning, and the story mentioned something about the Song of the Family or something like that, and then went back inside. When he went back inside their home, he saw Juana taking care of Coyotito, their baby. They both sit down for breakfast, leaving the baby in his box. Suddenly, they see a scorpion near him. But neither of them moved, they were both scared that if they startled the scorpion it would strike Coyotito. Suddenly, Coyotito shakes the rope that the scorpion was on. Kino lunged forward and tried to grab it but it slipped through his fingers and landed on the baby. The scorpion stung Coyotito on the shoulder. Angry, Kino grabbed the scorpion and killed it, then tried to help his son. Juana tried to help by sucking the poison out but it didn’t work. Kino and Juana eventually go to the doctor, a greedy man who only helps people with money. When they got there, Kino told the servant at the door what had happened and the servant repeated what he said to the doctor. But the doctor wanted money, and Kino had none. So he refused to help them and, infuriated, Kino took his fury and frustration out on the front gate, hurting his hand.

The first chapter introduces the situation and the setting the three main characters are in, the three main characters being Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. As I am guessing, mainly because I have not read further (and do not plan to read ahead) the story is going to delve into issues such as inequality, both on a monetary range (i.e. the more money you have, the better off you will be in society) and on a deeper racial issue, assuming that this story was written when inequality was heavy. Although it took me nearly until the end of the chapter to understand that the main characters were Indian and the doctor was Caucasian, I realize that it was written about a time, probably towards early colonial, where the English (I’m assuming) feel they are a far better race than all others, the example being when the doctor rejected Coyotito simply on the basis of him being of a different race. The songs were understood as Kino’s way of having his day go by, something passed down from his ancestors. To put it plainly this book will probably be delving into inequality, the type though has yet to be clarified, as most of Steinbeck’s books I’ve read (the ones for class) have dealt with inequality.

For my response about chapter one, I decided to choose clarify.
In chapter one, it starts out with Kino’s character and a little bit about him and his life. It also introduces his wife Juana and their son Coyotito to the story. The chapter moves on and describes the setting of where the story is and their suroundings are like, and how they live. Kino and his family live on an island and are not the richest or poorest people on it, but are seen as lower class citizens. On the island there are not a lot of industry businesses, but small towns with rich peolple and a doctor. Then the story takes a dramitic change and moves to a conflict with their son, Coyotito being stun by a scorpion and needing medical attention quick. This leads to the conflict with the doctor and about how some people just don’t have the willingness to help those in need when someoneasks for it. And because the doctor refuses Kino’s request he set’s sail to find some payment for the doctor so he can get treatment.

Chapter one was very shocking and unpredictable. It started off very slow and then all of a sudden Coyotito, the main character's son got Bit by a saorpion. Kino is the name of the main character and he was extremely angry when Coyotito got bit by the scorpion. Juana, who is Coyotito's mom was very scared about the danger which Coyotito faced, so she decided that she would take her son to a doctor. When they got to the doctor's house,Kino was very nervous and scared so he was acting in an agressive way.Once the doctor new their situation, he reacted in a very rude manner and unfortunately didn't help Kino and his family.

In this chapter, we learn of a few characters. The characters that were the most important in my opinion where Kino, Juana, and the doctor. Kino and Juana have an odd relationship, it seems to me that Juana is more loving towards Kino than Kino is towards Juana. An example of this is in the very beginning of the chapter, there is a scene where Kino wakes up to find that Juana was looking at him, or staring rather. Kino did not really show any love back, maybe it's just me but its what I observed. Something they did in fact share was the huge amount of love they had for their son Coyotito. This is shown especially in the scene with the scorpion, as soon as Kino had a hold of the scorpion he "threw it down and beat it into the earth with his fists". Then, when Juana finally had a hold of her son she began to suck the blood out of him and did everything she could to try and protect Coyotito. Another character I found interesting was the doctor, he seemed very resentful if you will towards Kino and Juana and he seemed very stuck-up. He did not seem willing to help them unless they had any money, which is selfish.

Well in chapter one it begins by telling how Kino and Juana wake up and do their daily routine and while they were doing their routine the author would mention how their routine had a song. So while Kino and Juana are doing their routines they see a movement on the baby’s crib thing. They happen to see a scorpion crawling on the crib and Kino runs towards to the crib to stop the scorpion. All of a sudden the scorpion falls and lands right next to the baby stinging the baby on the face. So Juana goes to the baby and starts to suck on the spot the baby got stung at and while Juana was doing that Kino was killing the scorpion. Well Juana stops sucking on the wound and tells the crowd to call the doctor but the crowd doubts that the doctor will help them because they were poor. So Juana starts running outside taking the baby with her so that they can go to the doctor faster and when they arrive they knock on his gate. They are met by a servant of the doctors and when the doctor tells the servant to turn them down Kino gets mad and punches the gate.

The first chapter talks about the setting and mood. The first couple of paragraphs talk about the setting and where the story mostly takes place. It introduces most of the characters and how they are like. The story talks about Kino, Juana, and their baby, Coyotito. In the first chapter, a scorpion comes in Kino’s brush house and is about to bite Coyotito. He gets up and tries to stop it, but is too late. The Scorpion bites Coyotito and later is killed by Kino. While all that happens, Juana is praying on the ground, hoping nothing would happen to her baby. After Coyotito gets bitten, he starts to cry and Juana cradles him. Outside, all the neighbors come to see what the problem is about. Juana sucks out most of the scorpion’s venom, but she said that Coyotito needs to see the doctor. When they get to the doctor’s house, the doctor doesn’t want to check the baby because they are “Indians” and mostly because they have no money. He doesn’t want to do anything for free. After, Kino gets so mad that he punches the gate so hard that his hand starts to bleed.

In chapter 1, the story starts off by describing the family members and their living conditions. It starts off as a happy family with a bad living condition. Then, it turns into the worst nightmare of a family. The baby of the family is bitten by a scorpion. The baby can even die if he doesn't get help immediately. This puts the family in great risk because they are beggars and no rich doctor will help them. This story has a great use of metaphors and similies. For example, "an then an explosion of fire as the sun arose out of the Gulf."

In chapter one, it starts off with Kino, the father, waking up to go see his son, Coyotito. His cradle is a small box that hangs on the wall with a rope. There is a scorpion that comes out form the conner of the wall and hangs onto the rope where Kino's son is. The small box moves and the scorpion falls on the baby. Kino tries to catch it but it just slips through his fingers. The scorpion's tail stings Coyotito on the shoulder. Coyotito's shoulder starts to swollen because of the poison from the insect. So Juana sucks the poison out. But it still hurts the baby. So they take him to the doctor. But the doctor refuses to give his services because they dont have money to pay. So they go into the sea and try to find the pearl to pay the doctore to help Coyotito.

Well, when the chapter starts talking about the stars I got an image of a beautiful night sky full of stars. When it introduces the characters I imagine Kino as a tall, very lean person, Juana as a medium-sized, slim person, and Coyotito strikes me as a small, lean peson as well. Also it seems to me that Kino isn't really interested in spending time with Juana, but I still think that he really loves her.
When Coyotito gets stung by the scorpion, I could almost feel the pain and I could visualize it very well. When Kino and Juana go to the doctor, who I read as geedy and selfish, he doesn't want to help Coyotito. Finally I think that the doctor will eventually pay in the future for not helping Kino and his family.

This story starts off quickly by introducing the main character, Kino. Shortly after Juana, Kino’s wife, and Coyotito, Kino’s son, were introduced. Kino seems like a serious and protective guy that tries hard to provide for his family. And Juana seems like she’s the type that stays home all day and tends the house. In this chapter it explains Kino listening to his “family song,” which to me seems like it is just the noise of hard work. For an example, we all know that jingling bells and “ho ho ho” signifies Christmas, well hard labor signifies Kino’s family. Also, in this chapter Kino’s son Coyotito was stung by a scorpion.

When Kino took action to rescue his baby, from the scorpion, it reminded me a lot of an incident that happened a year ago. My mom had just bought a treadmill. It was a present for my big brothers and me. My dad and my baby brother came out to look at it once it was finally assembled. My baby brother was the first to use it. I felt very uneasy. It was like when Kino heard the melody of the enemy when he saw the scorpion. He placed his right foot on the edge of the unmoving part and his left foot moved back. He lost balance and began to fall backwards. I jumped forward, spinning when I felt he was in my arms, placing myself beneath him. He remained uninjured, while I got really bad scratches. I understood Kino’s feelings to protect with the risk of getting hurt. Unlike him I did get hurt.

EVALUATE: In the first chapter, we meet Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. They are not a wealthy family; Kino is a diver who gathers pearls, Juana is his loyal, helpful wife, and Coyotito is their only baby son. It starts off with Kino hearing the song, the "Song of the Family". The main even in this chapter was Coyotito getting stung by the scorpion. It had fallen from the rope while he was shaking it. Kino tried to catch it, but missed. Juana began sucking the venom from the baby, but he screamed and the neighbors came. Juana asked for the doctor, but he would not come because he didn't come to the poor brush houses. Instead, the family went to the doctor, but he just dissed them by calling them "little Indians" and basically calling Coyotito a little animal. He had the servant tell them that he was busy with a more important case just because they had no money. They left sad and got in their canoe.

Predict
I predict that later in the story, possibly in the next chapter, that Coyotito is goin to die from the scorpion sting. It will not only be a sad and tragic event for Kino and Juana, but for the whole village. I think that if he dies, Kino and Juana will either take time to mourn together, or Kino will remove himself from Juana and friends and just focus on work and things like that. And in that time of work, i thimk that will be when he finds the pearl. Maybe he wont choose to sell it because it somehow reminds him of Coyotito. Or, if by some miracle Coyotito lives because Juana sucked out all of the poison, he can sell it and become very wealthy.

ch. 1 notes

Chapter 1 starts off with kino waking up to crowing roosters. He first looks at his son Coyotito, and then glances over at his wife Juana. Both Kino and Juana mention a song that they are hearing. The baby," Coyotito" is stung by a scorpion, and he screams out in pain. A rich doctor refuses to treat the poor Kino because of another patient. Kino is furious, and he punches the gate till his knuckles bleed.
