The pearl buyers all were trying to cheat Kino. You just know that they had all arranged how to get the lowest prices for it ahead of time. Kino becomes outraged when he could not get more than one thousand pesos for it, and rightly so. These people are very screwed up to try and pull a stunt like this. He storms away, and the pearl buyers become afraid of the punishment they would receive for not being able to get the pearl from Kino. This was a horrible thing to do to such an honest person.

Questions: Why does Kino not want to settle for the 1000 pesos that the dealer offers him? He doesn’t know the value of a pearl. Why does the entire neighborhood follow Kino to the dealers office? It doesn’t even concern them, it’s not like they’re getting anything from it. Was it a person who had caused Kino to fall to the ground and bleed from his scalp, or was it himself? Kino had had a knife with him when he was outside. Why does Kino want to go to the capital where he does not know anyone, or any places?

It seems to me that the town of La Paz is filled with nosy people. I don't think it's necessary that the whole entire town follows Kino to the pearl buyers. Juan Tomas and his wife going with them is understandable, but not the whole town. Oh well, I guess things were different back then. I am pretty sure that the pearl is worth way more than what the pearl buyers offered him. They were trying to rip him off, which makes me really mad. They made it so difficult. I think Kino deserved money because he was a good man (up to that point).

Connect:
I can connect with Kino in this chapter. I had an experience with being cheated out of my money. It makes you very angry to know that the other person knew you deserved more and lies to you. I think Kino was right to walk off and decide to go to the capital and sell the pearl for more. I also can connect with Kino on how you can doubt yourself. In this chapter the pearl buyers try to cheat Kino out of his money and he decides to sell it elsewhere. When he is walking away he begins to become doubtful. He wonders if the capital's pearl buyers will go even lower or not even buy the pearl. If he doesn't get a higher price then he thinks, he will never live that down. I have felt the same way when one time I said I could do something way better, but I wasn't really sure if I could. I was doubtful if I could do it, and if I didn't then I would be so embarrassed.

Predict

I predict that the pearl Kino found is going to bring him bad luck, misfortune, and it will tear his family apart. I think this because Juana only hears bad songs from the pearl. From the beginning Juana was uncomfortable with the pearl. It brought people around that were trying to take advantage and prey on Kino. The attention they were getting was all because they had something valuable. Nothing about their popularity was genuine. Kino continues to believe that the pearl will be good for his family. He tries to convince Juana of this.

In the beginning of this chapter everyone was getting ready to see when Kino would sell his pearl. The people had stopped what they would normally be doing just to watch Kino sell his pearl and Kino along with his family got ready by putting on the best clothes they had. Many people thought that money would make Kino into a greedy person and on the way to the pearl buyers, Juan Tomas went alongside with Kino to tell him to not be cheated. The first pearl buyer that Kino went to was told Kino that his pearl was fake and that caused Kino to become angry. The man would just offer 1500 pesos, but Kino didn’t take him so he told more pearl buyers about the value of his pearl and they just said it was of no value and fake. Kino began to think that they were trying to cheat on him so he decided that he would go to the capital to sell his pearl. Kino’s brother and wife warned him about the dangers of having the pearl and how it can destroy him and his family. When Kino refused to eat supper, he sensed something outside his house and he went outside to fight whatever it was. Juana tried to help out Kino, but when she got to him, Kino had been injured from the face and the robber had escaped. This caused Kino to become more determined into going to the capital and Juana agreed to go with him.

In chapter four, Kino goes to sell the pearl in town accompanied by his brother Juan Tomás and all the neighbors. As the pearl sellers had planned, they gave him the lowest bearable price to Kino. Kino obviously did not buy it and turned down the one thousand pesos the seller had offered. I think he should have accepted it because in the capital they are going to do the same thing to him since he is only and Indian. He is probably not going to get a better offer than he is getting now. Another thing is he should listen to Juana the pearl is going to bring evil. Kino is going to turn greedy and cruel. The story is already foreshadowing evil: the best thing to do is to return it to the ocean.

In chapter 4 everybody had come to know of Kino selling his pearl. Everybody stopped their daily routines to witness Kino sell his pearl. Kino's neighbors were discussing what they'd do if they had found the pearl. All the neighbors hoped that the pearl would not turn Kino into an ungrateful, selfish, or greedy man. A little man had been all ready to buy the pearl from Kino sitting at a desk. He got his nails polished and everything just for Kino.

Predict: In chapter four, Kino decides to sell his pearl and receive money. He has an estimated amount for the pearl but the pearl buyer offers less than Kino thinks its worth. Kino decides to not sell his pearl and adventure to the capital and receive the appropriate amount. I predict that Kino will change his mind and crush the pearl as his wife, Juana, says. Juana believes the pearl is evil and will destroy their family and she wants to end that belief by destroying the pearl. I think that Juana will be relieved when Kino decides to destroy the pearl. Destroying the pearl would be the best thing for their family. With the pearl, the family is unsafe. Without the pearl, the family could be safe and not have to worry about keeping the pearl in a place where no one can find it. The pearl brings Kino’s family evil presence and would be better off without it.

In this chapter Kino was going to sell his pearl. That morning he was walking with his family in their finest clothes to go sell the pearl. Everybody was lined up to watch the pearl be sold. The first offer was for 1000 pesos and Kino angrily declined that the man said it’s not worth anything because it was abnormality huge. After another offer was 500 pesos but Kino declined the offer so Kino was frustrated and just left back home with the pearl. He decided to go sell it at the capitol. That night there was another intruder and he stabbed him and then intruder left and that’s how the chapter ended.

In chapter four, it opens up that everyone in town knows that Kino is going to sell his pearl. The whole town is watching him, never missing what he is going to do with his pearl. He doesn’t sell his pearl because he believes he is being cheated by the pearl buyers. He then goes home and hides the pearl in a whole he dug up. His neighbors started talking if they’ve been cheated by the pearl buyers all these years but doubts themselves that they are the expert at pricing the pearl’s. Without selling his pearl in his town he plans to find a buyer in the capital. He believes his pearl is worth more than a thousand pesos, but that is quite a bit of money for a person who has little or none themselves. The chapter ends with Kino getting cut up and hurt badly
by someone.

Kino, Juana, Coyotito, and Kino's brother, Juan Tomas, went to the pearl buyers to see how much the pearl would be sold for. On their way to the buyers, the people of La Paz joined them to see what would happen. When they arrived Kino showed one of the buyers the pearl, and the buyer examined it, but told Kino he would only buy it for one thousand pesos. The buyer told Kino that it wouldn't sell for much because it was like 'fool's gold.' The buyer then had three other buyers come into the room to look at the pearl and give their offering. Kino didn't like any of the offerings, so he took his pearl and said he would go to the capital and sell it there. When they got back to their house Kino started having doubts about traveling so far to the capital, but said he would for the sake of his child.

In this chapter Kino was ready to cash in his pearl. I'm not sure why everyone in the village went with him though? Well in the previous chapter it talks about how the pearl buyers like to haggle down their prices, purposely. So, me, as the reader knowing that, I knew the pearl buyers weren't going to buy it for anything but the bare minimum. Turns out, i was right and Kino was angry that they only wanted to give him 1000 pesos for the pearl, so Kino stormed out. What i want to know is, if all the villagers were there with Kino at the pearl buyers place, why didn't they help Kino get a bigger and better price?

In this chapter, Kino is going to the pearl buyers. As he is preparing to go he tilts his hat and squints his eyes to show that he is serious. Kino and his older brother, Juan Tomas, goes to the pearl buyer together. When the pearl buyer sees the pearl he said that it is worth nothing and offered a price Kino did not deserve. Kino was very mad that the pearl buyers are cheating him so he decided to take the pearl himself to the capital. I predict that Kino will go to the capital and will be cheated there as well.

Chapter four is very disappointing. Kino went to town and tried to sell his pearl. He believed his pearl was worth a lot more than what he was offered. Kino was mad and believed he was being cheated and he decided to take the pearl to the capital to get a better offer. Kino was in his home, he then stepped outside for a while and something suddenly attacked him. Kino didn’t see what it was but it made a big injury in his face. After the incident Kino told Juana he was leaving to the capital and she agreed to go with him.

Predict

In chapter four Kino, his family, and the rest of his village took the great pearl to be sold in town. When the dealer tells Kino that the pearl is a fake it is a great disappointment to everyone. Kino thinks that he is being cheated and he is determined to find the offer he deserves. I think that when he goes to find the better offer all the dealers will tell him that it is a fake, but then one man will stand up and say that they are cheating him and that he deserves better money that what they would give him. A big catastrophe would hit everyone in their village because they wouldn’t know what to think. Would that be a foolish move of Kino to make to believe one dealer out of many? Maybe that dealer was lying to him and he would take the pearl without giving Kino the money knowing that it was really worth a lot.

Summary: I feel very bad and angry for Kino. So, he goes into town to sell the pearl like any other person would do. Instead of getting tons of money for it, the dealers he goes to try to get their hands on it for much less than it's worth. I feel very angry because it's not right to try to rip some one off. Maybe all that was going through their minds was they could get it from Kino and sell it to someone else and make a huge amount of money. I guess everybody was that poor that they would scam one another just make a quick buck. It is really sad and devastating. I think that maybe in the near future, Kino is going to get an offer he can refuse. It will be lots of pesos, but not as much as the pearl is really worth.

When Kino goes to sell his pearl I suppose the entire neighborhood following is just them being nosy now because Kino hardly thinks to them as comfort. However, I can't say I wouldn't go either, this is the first time in a while one of their own has come to such good fortune with "the pearl of the world". The buyers he goes to are obviously lying at the worth, for the first dealer he goes to see, as it says, skips a flick of his coin on accident. However, it also informs us that they have been doing this for quite some time, which is why Kino can read nothing on their faces. Yes, the price they offered was not great, but I think Kino wanting to go to the Capital goes with his newfound right to be higher and more justified than the others. I would have been with the neighbors who thought it was brave of him to leave the offer.

In chapter 4, everyone in the village knows that Kino was going to sell his pearl that day to pay off the doctor. I think that Kino knew that the whole sickness thing was just a setup. I don't think that Juana knew, however. Now everyone is getting ready to get the pearl. I think that whoever the pearl buyer is will cheat Kino out of a lot of money. I think that Kino's brother was very wise to tell him to not get cheated. I think that he has some experience with pearl selling, and I think that the little speech will make Kino more alert. When the word got to the pearl buyers, they were all alert all of sudden, and they got prepared for Kino and his beauty. When Kino brought out this pearl, they could not make a deal because the pearl was so rare. I think that the whole price thing within the dealers was fake.

In this chapter, the day of Kino selling his pearl had arrived. Somehow, everybody knew about it and by the time that Kino and his family were out of their house everybody else was too. The pearl buyers had also heard the news of Kino selling his pearl. This was good news to them because they had also heard that the pearl was worth a lot of money. When Kino and his family had arrived at the first pearl buyer's shop, the man was very nervous. He kept balancing a coin in between his fingers and when he gave Kino a price for the pearl, the only thing Kino did was that he got very angry. At the end, Kino decided to not sell his pearl to those pearl buyers because he thought the pearl was worth a lot more.

In chapter four, Kino refuses to pay the pearl buyers the amount of money they offer. He rebels against them and tells them that he would look elsewhere. I predict that this will cause danger or dilemmas for Kino, Juana, and Coyotito in the future. The pearl has only caused trouble for the family so far in the story, and eventually it might even tear them apart. And now he has made enemies with the pearl buyers. Now that he has defied them, no buyers will want to deal with him. I predict Kino’s one action in defying the pearl buyers will cause the family to risk a lot and even destroy themselves.

EVALUATE: Now, the whole town knows that Kino is going to get the pearl traded for money. Neighbors and pearl fishers even leave their work to go with him, Juana, Coyotito, and Juan Tomas. Juan Tomas tells him about the possibility of him not getting the full value of the pearl, but Kino does not even know how much a pearl like that would even be worth. When he gets to the city, he goes to one of the dealers who tells him that the pearl is more museum quality than market. He offers Kino a thousand pesos. Kino gets really mad and tells him its worth 50 times that. The dealer insists it's accurate and even tells him to get a second opinion. Other dealers' offers are less than the first dealer's offer, so he goes back and says that he's going to the capital city to sell the pearl. That dealer ofers 1500 pesos, but Kino refuses and makes his way back home. Some neighbors try to tell him that he should have taken the offers and others said he was being scammed. Later, he burries his pearl and Juan Tomas tells him about the dangers of going to capital city. Kino goes to bed, but stays up to protect the pearl. Juana stays to comfort him. He goes to the doorway, but Juana tries to tell him to stop. An intruder comes in and attacks Kino, leaving him half conscious. Juana goes to help him and asks him to get rid of the evil pearl. Kino tells her that tomorrow they will go to the capital. Then, they both go to sleep.

In this chapter, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito get prepared to sell the big pearl in the town of La Paz. As Kino and Juana set out to their mission Juan Tomas expresses his concern that Kino may be cheated and tells him about an old method for trading they used years before Kino was born. As they arrive in the city the bidders step into their office and begin to examine the pearl. When all the bids are rejected or very low Kino becomes angry and steps out and walks home. The neighbors all debate on what had happened that day. Some said that Kino should have taken the final bid, others that he was right to deny them, many agreed that he was right and that because he needed the money to was acceptable. That night, Kino feels an evil presence overcome him and as he checks to see what it was he is assaulted and left half conscious on the floor. Juana helps Kino and then they decide to set out to the capital in the morning to sell their pearl.

Chapter Four: The Pearl.
Questions: Why does the doctor become so interested in the pearl after his discovery of it? From what has happened in the chapter, why does Kino not realize that the town’s people want his pearl for their own and will stop at nothing to get it? Why do the people in the town follow Kino to the dealer’s office? At the dealer’s office, why do they try and cheat Kino of selling his pearl for the lowest price? When offered a better deal, why does Kino take it? Why doesn’t Juana talk to Kino about his decision making about the pearl and help solve it instead of doing nothing? Because of the pearl, why do the people think that they will benefit from it?

The pearl buyers wait anxiously in their stalls to offer the lowest price possible for Kino's pearl. In his office, a stout slow pearl buyer hopes that Kino will come to him. While he waits and hopes, the pearl buyer practices sleight of hand with a coin in his right hand below the desk. Kino enters this man's office and receives a kind greeting. The buyer's face betrays no reaction as he saw the grand pearl, but under the desk his fingers stumble with the coin and it drops into his lap. All the spectators hold their breath waiting to hear the buyer's offer. There was a final offer of 1500 pesos and Kino denies that offer feeling he has been cheated on. The natives feel it was a ridiculous decision of Kino to deny such a price. Kino does deserve a good price for the pearl because he had been a good, honest man.

Evaluate- Kino has gone to sell his precious pearl. Everyone has gone and waits patiently outside within hearing distance to spread the gossip. He gets angry at the dealer. The dealer makes a low offer and then three more dealers come in. Each agreeing the pearl is indeed worthless. He rejects the original dealer offer. As he walks out the dealer raises his offer. He says he’s being cheated and will go to the capital. People have different opinions. One side sees him as a foolish man. That, that amount offer would make him a simple rich man. Maybe not everything he said he would have done but he would be rich none the less. The other side claimed he was an honorable man. That he should be respected for his decision. Later on he’s jumped as he walks outside in the dark because he heard a noise. He gets injured and only worries Juana more. Juana continues saying throw it away.
