In this chapter, Kino and Juana took there baby and ran away into the mountains. Two trackers and a man with a gun were sent after them and almost catch them the first time. They continue farther down the path and Kino takes his family farther into the mountains. They stop and hide in a cave overlooking a small pond, and the two trackers and the man are there before nightfall. They deicide to camp there, and Kino kills them, but not before a stray bullet kills their son. After this they head back to the tribe, and throw the pearl into the ocean.

I did not like the way this book ended. I get way too into stories and this was not the best book to read on Christmas Eve. Kino and Juana had no choice but to leave their town. They left in the midst of a storm so they didn't leave tracks behind for a while. While they were resting, Kino saw that they had trackers on their tail. I didn't really understand why they would send people after them, though. Is it because of the man Kino killed in self defense? Are they still trying to get the pearl? Anyways, it was a very sad ending. They were so close to getting rid of the trackers, but Coyotito died when one of the trackers shot his gun. The day Kino and Juana returned to La Paz was a memorable and sad day for all people of the town.

Chapter 6:

In chapter 6 Juana, Coyotito and Kino flee the village to escape the predators of their potential fortune. Two trackers and one man with a gun track them. They avoid getting caught initially. Then they travel deeper into the mountains. They get trapped in a cave. The only way out is back through the predators. Kino decides to try to attack a predator and get his gun. He was unsuccessful and a stray bullet hits and kills Coyotito. Juana and Kino escape and throw the pearl into the ocean because it has brought them so much heart ache and misfortune.

Kino and Juana take little Coyotito and run fo the mountains. Kino doesn't really like to travel in he dark, but in this situation he has to. Kino is happy when the moon comes up because he sees that path more clearly now. The downside to this is the wind has died down completely and the footprints will still be there in the morning. Kino thinks otherwise because the large wagon that drives through to the town will brush any trace of them away. All through the night Kino and Juana keep traveling further in to the mountains. When they stop, they stop in a cave that overlooks a pond. While on they're break, two trackers and a man were spotted by Kino. When they decide to camp there, Kino goes down and kills the men. But before he could finish, a bullet kills their son. Juana and Kino are devastated. They eventually return to the village and toss the pearl back into the ocean.

Evaluate/Question: I did not like the way the book ended at all. It was very sad. Kino, Juana, and Coyotito adventure out to find the real value of the pearl and are followed by trackers. Why were there trackers following them? Were they looking for the pearl? Did they want to kill Kino for killing the man back at the village? Kino decides to attack the men, but at the perfect moment to attack, a faint cry comes from the cave above. Kino knew it was Coyotito, but the trackers didn’t. Why was Coyotito crying? What was Juana doing to prevent her baby from crying? One of the men sleeping is awaken from this noise and suspects it’s a coyote. The watcher decides to fire his rifle towards the cave where the cry had come from in hopes of stopping the noise. When Coyotito died did Juana and Kino fell sad and hopeless? The problem I had was that they didn’t show any feelings besides gloomy looks when they returned to La Paz. Why did they return to La Paz? They had no reason to return besides the fact of throwing the pearl into the sea and it be lost forever.

This chapter began with Kino and his family escaping town to go north into Loreto. They walked all night without stopping until they came across a clearing in the side of the road. They hid there and they saw a cart pass by that helped clear their footprints. Kino slept and woke up to the sound of the trackers that had been sent to find Kino and he prepared to leap for an attack. Kino wasn’t found so they decided to head to the mountains and when Kino told Juana to leave him, she refused and decided to stick with him. Kino and his family began making zig zag trails to confuse the trackers and started heading to a cleft that contained water. When they reached the top of the cleft they drank water and found caves where they could hide because the trackers would reach them in the evening. When the trackers finally got to the cleft they turned on a match and Kino got to see them. Kino began making a plan of taking the rifle and killing the rest and he had to do it before the moon rose. When Kino was about to leap for the man with the rifle, Coyotito began to cry and the trackers with the rifle shot it because he thought it was a coyote. Kino became so furious that he killed the three trackers. Then when Kino and Juana returned to La Paz, they didn’t look at anybody and just went to the ocean and threw the pearl into it.

In this chapter it was really sad. Kino kept running. People sent trackers because I guess they really wanted the pearl. So they decided to leave in the middle of a storm to cover up their tracks. Well Kino saw that the trackers were still really close to them. So Kino fought them, right before one died he shot a gun that killed Coyotito. Kino and Juana left back to La Paz on there way home they dropped the pearl back into the ocean . when they got there it was a sad day for the whole town. I think the book ended really sad.

In chapter 6, KIno and his family are planning to go to Loreto. They hid on the side of a road during the day. Kino has once again pictured all the great things he could do if he had sold his great pearl. People have been sent to track down Kino and his family. Kino had seen these trackers and had decided to head to the west. Kino had snuck up on the group of trackers and had taken the rifle from the rifleman and began shooting without any destination for his shots. Sadly, Coyotito had gotten shot and had half of his head missing, of which he had died from. Kino and Juana returned to the city, and Kino threw the pearl back into the ocean for it was a great evil to possess.

In this chapter Things got even worse. Kino and Juana took Coyotito and ran away from their town La Paz. Kino has a couple of trackers on there backs. Kino messed up really bad in this chapter. He ends up killing a man that was there before him and then the other trackers caught up to them and shot Coyotito. This was all Kino's fault that his baby had to die like this. This book and the ending was terrible. IN my opinion.

In this chapter, Kino and his family runs away into the mountains and decides to go north. Kino’s brother distracted people by saying they went south but, three trackers were able to find them. Two men were on foot and one was on a horse with a rifle. Kino and his family hides in a cave while the trackers search for them. As a result, Kino decides to attack the trackers so that Juana and Coyotito can escape. As Kino is close by the trackers, Coyotito cries. The trackers heard the sound and thought it was a coyote. The trackers being cautious shot into the cave and killed Coyotito. Juana and Kino then returns back to La Paz with a rifle and a dead body. At the end the pearl is thrown back into the water for their good.

In chapter six Kino realizes that the pearl is bringing more evil than it will ever bring good. After Kino hears Coyotito’s dying screams he decides to head back to his home and get rid of the pearl. The town’s people are curious about what Kino is doing back so soon after setting off for the capitol. When the town sees Kino throw the pearl into the ocean they are probably wondering why he is throwing such a great amount of money away. They do not understand that the pearl is evil and should not be troubled with One day maybe one of the villagers will go looking for the pearl and find it.

In this chapter the family are escaping into the wilderness. Kino and his family set camp in the morning they set back out. Kino realizes that there are trackers pursuing them. Kino hides in the brush but then noticed that he will be discovered so they hurry towards the mountains with out worrying about their tracks. They then settle in a cave and Juana quiets and comforts Coyotito. The trackers set camp near the cave where the family is hiding. Two of them fall asleep while one keeps guard. Kino knows the only way to escape is to leave now so he quietly goes toward the trackers but then Coyotito gets restless and cries out loud. The cry woke up one of the trackers that were asleep and they were unsure if it was a human or an animal so he shoots toward the cry to scare it; as a result, the bullet kills Coyotito. Kino then lunges and kills them. They then mourned about Coyotito’s death and head into town. Kino takes the pearl and throws it back in the ocean and that’s how this book ends.

While resting, Kino is awaken and sneaks under a fallen branch where he sees the trackers observing the ground. Kino's ready to attack, but doesn't as the trackers go a different direction. He then rushes back to Juana and Coyotito and leads them into the mountains where he hopes to lose the trackers. When they make their way into a area with a pond, Kino senses that the men will arrive before nightfall, so they take cover into a small cave overlooking the pond. Soon enough, the trackers make their appearance, and after looking around a bit, they stop and rest. Kino took immediate action, and climbed slowly down from the cave where he attacked the three men, killing them all. As Kino and Juana return back to their village, we learn that Coyotito was killed from a bullet shot from the gun. Kino and Juana then make their way to the ocean where Kino throws the pearl into it.

In chapter six Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are running away from some really good trackers. After the trackers have past, they made their way towards the mountains and during the night the trackers are right below the cave they have hidden in. When Kino saw that the two of the three trackers fell asleep he climbed down and waited in till the right time to kill the third guy and then kill the others. As he readies himself, the tracker hears Coyotito cry and he fires a shot and quiets the cry. After the shot Kino runs stabs one of the other trackers, takes the gun from the guy that was on guard then shoots the third guy while he was running away. In the morning they return with a shawl full of blood and Kino, blood all over him with a rifle he took from the trackers. They walk in to town greeting no one even his own brother and making their way to the ocean. As they reach the ocean Kino takes one last look at the pearl and launches it out into the ocean watching it in till it disappears.

Clarify:

In the last chapter Kino, Juana, and Coyotito set off to protect themselves from anyone that will do harm to them. While they are running from the people Kino comes across three trackers. They decide to head for the mountains so that the men will have a least likely chance of finding them. When they end up reaching a pool of water to stop at they also find a cave. Soon after they hide out in the cave for a while the trackers come up and stay by the water. Kino realizes that they only way for his family to survive is by him taking the man’s rifle; Kino decides that he will make his way down from the cave without being noticed and attack the man. When Kino jumps the gun shot goes off by the tracker and it hits Coyotito. The family returns to their village with their deceased son, but when they arrive no one talks to them or makes any contact, they just all watch as the family makes their way to the shore of the ocean and throws the pearl far from where they will ever see it again.

Question: I have 6 questions for this post. Why didn't Kino just willing give over the pearl? Why didn't Juana just listen to Kino and go separate ways? Had she done this, Coyotito probably would have survived. Do you think that had they sold the pearl life would be better? Will Kino and Juana's relationship become closer or more distance on behalf of Coyotito's death? Do you think that had Kino sold the pearl he would really have used the money for what he originally planned? Or do you think greed would have taken over and used it for other selfish things? Do you think Juana should still stay with Kino considering that he has beaten her, their relationship is uneasy, and he basically shot their baby?

This was a sad chapter. I did not like the ending. Well in this chapter Kino and Juana were on their way away from the town. They thought they were not going to follow them. Kino heard something and told Juana to keep the baby quiet. He went twoard the trail and saw 2 men on feet and 1 on a horse. He knew they were trackers trcking them down. He was going t attack them but they didn't see him. Kino told Juana it was best to go toward the mountains. He thought they were going to loose them but they were on their trail. Kino decided to hide Juana and Coyotito in a cave up in the mountains until the trackers got close to them and he would attack them. It was dark when they finally got close enough to them. Kino was going to attack the only man awake and kill the other two. So he left Juana and Coyotito in the cave to keep them safe. He got close to them and was ready to attack, but then the moon started to rise and then the man could see his shadow. But he was still willing to attack. But once again he couldn't, the man heard Coyotito whining and knew someone was there. But still he eaped toward him and the man shot in the sky, and at last Kino killed all three men. But, it was for nothing because Coyotito was dead. They went back into La Paz, and at the end Kino throws the pearl into the ocean.

Chapter six, the last chapter of this book was my favorite chapter. It was sad and suspenseful but at the end it made me like it because it didn't really have a happy ending. My favorite though, was the part where the author described what Kino really saw in the pearl. At first I thought it was very scary because then he was trying to get closer to what was supposed to happen to them, which was very bad. Then I figured that this was all part of the whole suspense that was created in the last chapter of the book.

Predict;
I predict that in chapter six, Kino and Juana will be heading north in attempts of an escape from their old town. I believe that because Kino had, in fact, committed a crime and murdered that man that people will be after them. In due time, they will run into some trouble. This trouble could involve either them becoming very ill or maybe even them running into someone dangerous. Something probable would be the fact that they might run into someone who is somehow connected to the people who are looking for them or that they simply never find anywhere to stay, run out of food and die of starvation. But if you want to look at the optimistic outcome of this situation we could say that they do find somewhere to stay, clear the names and for the rest of their lives live completely carefree, but unfortunately the probability of an outcome such as this one, in my opinion, is very low.

Evaluate: Kino and his family escape town and start heading north. They are making sure not to be found by erasing their tracks. Juana starts thinking that maybe the pearl isn't as valuable as Kino thinks, but he disagreed. He looked into it to tell the future and saw a bloody body, Juana beat up walking home, and Coyotito swollen. However, he tells Juana that he sees a rifle, them getting married, and Coyotito getting an education. As they are resting, Kino notices three trackers. The trackers got closer, but then kept going. Kino suggested that they would lose the trackers if they went over the mountain, so that's where they went. Later that night, they went to rest in a cave, but the trackers were nearby. While they were settled, Kino went to distract him so Juana and Coyotito could escape. But Coyotito cried out, so one of the trackers shot the gun to quiet the noise. The shot just so happened to hit Coyotito, so Kino went crazy and started to attack the tracker with his knife. He shot the other two trackers. Then, Juana and Kino got back to La Paz with dead Coyotito in a sack. They didn't talk to anyone. Kino and Juana went to the edge of the sea and threw the pearl back in.

In chapter six, they are running away from the town. They left footprints, but they hoped that they would not be noticed. Sometimes the native animals would scare them, but Kino had his knife, and that protected them. They knew that whoever would follow them would try and take the pearl. A little bit later, Kino awoke from his sleep and saw three to four trackers, searching for them. Two were on foot, and one was on horseback. They were going to go to the mountains, because the trackers had found their trail. They went up to the place where they had rested. When the moonlight was barely up, Kino attacked them, but not before they had accidental shot and killed the baby. Kino killed them all. And when morning came, they went back to their village, and threw the pearl back into the ocean.

In this chapter Kino, Juana and the baby started off on their journey to escape their old life. They walked all night then decided to rest off the rode in the jungle. After a few hours of relaxing Kino hear a noise so he goes outside to investigate. Then he realizes that there are three trackers coming down the road. So Kino plans to kill the one with the rifle first so then he could kill the other two after. So as the trackers stop right in front Kino, they look around then they take off on their way again. Kino told Juana that they have to go now because they will be back so they headed for the mountains. After they traveled across the desert they finally reached the mountains. Kino looked over the side of one mountains side to see that the trackers were on their way. So Kino took his family to a cave in the mountain which was elevated and they took shelter there. As night fell the trackers got to where Kino was and they also took shelter there but on the lower elevation. Kino knew he had to kill them so as two of the trackers fell asleep, he climbed down from his headquarters and was right behind the rifleman. As he got ready to strike Kino’s baby whimpered and the rifleman and one of the trackers looked up. Then the baby whimpered again so the rifleman picked up his gun and fired, and right when he fired Kino pounced. Kino killed the rifleman and then he took his gun and killed the other two. Then the story tells that Kino and Juana went back to their town and went to the seashore. Everyone just stared at their arrival because sitting in Juana’s pouch was a baby with its head blown off. And at the seashore Kino threw the evil pearl into the sea.

As I expected, this chapter hardly left Kino and his family as they were. Trackers were sent after them to take the pearl and, most likely, kill them. As they hide, Kino is doing most of what he can to protect his family, but he knows it might be fruitless and grows afraid. Juana helps him greatly as they continue to hide. I thought it was brave of Kino to go down and attempt to overpower the men, but the consequence of having Coyotito die was horrible. The ending was sad, and I didn't want it to end this way, but I suppose him and Juana still being together, stronger, is at least good.

Kino, now aware of what the pearl has done to him and his family, was forced to go on the run because of the pearl. The pearl made him kill, the pearl made him protect his family, the pearl made him animal-like. He tried to protect his family, and in the midst, this was his very unraveling, because in his murderous state, he shot in the wrong direction, killing his son. He had no use of the pearl now, and the only thing important to him was that his family was together, and this was why he threw the pearl into the sea. It was the “Pearl of the World”, it had always belonged to the sea, and he could finally live with his family, because in the end he realized all that was important to him was his family. He learned what greed can do to people, and no doubt had become a better, wiser, man because of it.

Chapter six was sad. I am not surprise of the ending, but I am disappointed. The ending was a little confusing. Ironically, Coyotito ended up dying with or without the money to pay for his illness (scorpion bite). Coyotito was cured from the poison of the scorpion, but Kino’s poison of greed, vain, and stubbornness had a worse effect on Coyotito. I think Kino should have died. Juana was right the pearl has brought evil and misfortune.

Predict:

In Chapter 6, I predicted that Kino, Juana, and Coyotito would make it safely to the north find a place to stay and begin a new life. They would be able to use the pearl and exchange it for good money, then buy a home and get married. But I was surprised when I found out what happened at the end of the story. I had not foreseen Coyotito dying, in fact that was not what I had expected at all. To be truthful if anyone had to die I had believed that Steinbeck would have killed Juana in the story. But that’s not how it ended. All in all it was a sad ending and I found in the end that my prediction at the beginning of the chapter couldn’t have been more wrong.

Summary:

The ending of this book is really depressing. Forced to leave their home, Kino and Juana head toward the nearest town. When Kino tries to hide their tracks, he notices three men following them. Kino, Juana, and Coyotito rush for the mountains hoping to loose the uninvited followers. Once at the top of the mountain Kino, Juana, and the baby wait in a near by cave for the trackers. Once nightfall arrived the trackers appeared at the top of the mountain. Luckily Kino was able to kill the men, but unfortunately one of the men's bullets shot Coyotito. Filled with pain, Juana and Kino threw the pearl into the ocean.

In this chapter Kino, Juana, and Coyotito run away to the north to hide and sell the cursed pearl. Once Kino thought they were a decent distance away to rest they hid behind some brush to rest and eat. Suddenly, Kino heard horse hooves and people talking so he hurried a little ways closer to the road to see who these people were. he then realized that these men weren't just ordinary men but trackers. Kino remembered that these trackers could track a sheep through the rocky mountains. Kino warned Juana to keep the child quiet and went back to hide with them. The trackers passed their brushed away tracks but Kino knew they would come back so they headed up into the mountains. When they finally reached a stream to drink Kino looked down to the valley and saw the trackers heading towards them so he and Juana and the baby hid in a shallow cave. When the trackers finally reached where they were hiding Kino knew that he would have to kill the three men. One of the men had a gun so he knew he;d have to kill that one first. Kino attacked the man and stabbed him but the man was struggling to get away when the gun went off so Kino grabbed the gun and shot the man between the eyes. Kino then heard the crying of death from his son. the next day people saw Kino and Juana heading out to the water with a bloody blanket where the baby's head had been shot off. Kino looked to his wife to throw the pearl into the water but she wanted him t throw it so he chucked the cursed pearl into the water where it sunk to the bottomless ocean.

I was very dissapointed in this book because it misleads you entirely. This family has always been poor and they finally get a lick of fortune but it ends up ruining their family and lives forever.

In chapter 6, it was pretty much the end of the road for Kino an his family. It started when they were resting and they found trackers trying to find them. He decided that they should go to the mountains because he knew that the trackers would come back for them. Juana thought that if Kino gave them the pearl, that maybe hey would let him go free, but of course Kino didn't believe that something like that could happen. Kino suggested that they should separate just in case, he told her to take the baby and go to a near by village, and he would continue moving up the mountain. Juana didn't think that was a good idea, i think she should've have went, but my theory on her decision might have been because it said that she cannot live without a man in her life and that she wouldn't know how. Kino wasn't to sure about not splitting up but he agreed anyways. They made it up the mountain but two trackers were already waiting for them there. Kino killed them both but a bullet hit their son and killed him. In the end they were still left with nothing and eventually threw the pear back into the ocean.

Predict: In chapter six I predict that Kino and his family will attempt to escape the town and get away from the towns people that want his precious pearl. I predict that people in the town will grow frustrated with Kino and his family and will send trackers to hunt them down and bring them back, dead or alive. I predict that during their travel to Loreto, Kino will find some peace with himself and his family, but also will be the death of them in the end. I predict that the trackers will catch up with them in the end and Kino will have to stand up for his family, as he always did. I predict that because of Kino’s actions his beloved Coyotito will fall to one of the trackers bullets in crossfire with Kino. I predict that Kino and Juana will finally surrender to the towns people because, they have nothing else to loose but each other now that their son is dead. And finally I predict that Kino will finally stand up for what he believes in and through away the pearl back to the dark depts. Of once it came, and that Kino and Juana will finally live in peace.

I personally did not like the ending in this book. It wasn't a happy ending, which i noticed Steinbeck doesn't write in any of his books that we have read so far. The book seemed to just end, and not answer any questions. I also didn't like that the family was torn apart and how Juana and Kino ended up losing their son. I am also wondering why they sent trackers after them? I also wonder how the trackers actually tracked them, did the brother stick to his story?

I thought the ending of the book was really sad. Coyotito was the one to die, even though Kino was the one who was selfish and wouldn’t give up the pearl. I thought Kino was the one who should have died because it was his fault. I didn’t like how Kino threw the pearl back into the ocean after his son died. I thought he should have done it when someone broke into his house to try to steal the pearl. Did Juana forgive Kino at the end of the book, because he caused the baby to die?

Along the way however, Kino is starting to change and become more cautious, alert, and agile because of the pearl. As they started traveling Kino realizes that they are being followed and hunted by three guys. Kino starts to make tracks that were hard to follow as they proceeded toward the mountains. Kino knows that the trackers will find them soon and so he tells Juana to hide in this cave up in the mountains. Kino waits and stays there till the hunters are upon them, but they decide to rest by the water pool, not far from where Kino and Juana are hiding. Kino tells Juana to keep Coyotito queit because he is going to take out all three of the hunters. He suceeds and hears a death cry where Juana is hiding, the book then skips to where the villages are saying that Kino is coming back home. Kino and Juana finally throw the pearl back where they found it.

I really didnt enjoy the ending to this story, however i somewhat expected it. The pearl turned Juana and Kino's life from happy, to unhappy. They lost there baby Coyotito, all because of a pearl. If Kino had just accepted the 1,000
peso for the pearl, things would of turned out very differently. They might of still had there baby, and he would of gotten an education as he would grow up. I believe the moral of the story is "Don't let greediness get the best of you". Kino's greed to get more money for the pearl changed how he was as a person. He attacked his wife, and killed four people, just to protect the pearl. I could see his side of the story, trying to make more money, so that he could get his babies health back, and start a life with Juana. However, everything was taken to a much different level then it needed to be taken to. Its amazing what can happen when people go from having nothing, to something. Only to have that something, in Kino and Juana's case, destroy everything they had.

I wanted to do my extra post in response to KennaSandberg's question in her post. She asked why the trackers were following them. My answer to that would be that they were tracking Kino because first of all he killed a man back in the village and I think their second motive would be to steal the pearl from them. Her other question was why did they return to La Paz? I think they returned to La Paz because they didn't have to worry about the trackers and I also think now that their son is dead there is no point in going on. They probably feel devastated and don't feel the need to go on anymore.

This chapter was filled with excitement. I’m a very visual reader and John Steinbeck only makes it easier for me to visualize the characters actions. I could almost see Kino as he left the cave leaving Juana with Coyotito. I imagined Kino a lot like a cat as it’s about to catch a gopher or mouse. I’ve seen plenty of that many times. The cat slowly creeps without making a sound upon where its feet touch. It deletes any further necessary movements which makes move without a sound. It moves swift and steady. It waits for an opening that it can take. Careful so it won’t mess up that way the prey doesn’t know it’s there. When Kino jumped for the gun it also reminded me the time my cat jumped on my head, from the top of my roof, just to scare me, and make me spill the food I had for it.

In this chapter, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito flee into the mountains. But thay are followed by trackers and a man with a gun who want to steal the pearl. When thay get trapped by the theifs in a cave, Kino tries to rush the man with the gun. But he doesn't get there in time and the man shoots and kills Coyotito. The shot blew off the poor baby's head. In disgust with themselves and the pearl, Kino throws it into the ocean where it can do no more harm.

Chapter Six;

Juana, Kino, and of course, baby Coyotito are on the run basically in this last chapter. Kino is suggesting that he split up from Juana and the baby, but Juana refuses to because she wants to travel together. So, they try a new plan to trick their pursuers. Kino makes a false path, so that maybe it will help them gain just a little more time. Then they decide to go up the mountain, in hopes of losing the trackers. The trackers eventually end up going up the mountain as well. Kino decides to attempt to kill the only awake watchmen, but baby Coyotito ruins the plan when he lets out a shriek. Another tracker awakens to the sound of it, and thinking it was a coyote, he shoots in the direction of the cry. Evidently, baby Coyotito gets killed by the shot. Juana and Kino are in mourning but they must go on with life. They are in La Paz and this is the start of a new life.

Ch. 6 notes

Kino has a vision in the pearl that there is a bloody body lying on the ground, a swollen faced Coyotito, and a beaten Juana walking home. They almost get caught by some people, but get lucky and escape up the hillside. During the night Kino springs on the three men and is successful in killing them all. Unfortunately, one of the shots fired off hit Coyotito and killed him. After the walk home they finally throw the pearl into the ocean. They watch the pearl sink deep down into the ocean.

extra credit post: summary

In the beginning of the story, Kino wakes up and gazes around the room, first at his baby, Coyotito, then at his wife lying next to him. Juana and Kino are listening to a song in their heads, and they refer to it as the "Family Song". They end up having to go to a doctor because Coyotito was stung by a scorpion. Sadly, the rich doctor refuses them because of financial reasons and probably because the other patient that he was attending to was of higher social status. Kino punches at the gate in frustration until his knuckles are bloody. In chapter 2 the story is based around the searching and discovery of a valuable pearl. Juana and Kino both paddle out to sea and Kino dives into the water to gather oyster shells. After two minutes he returns with many shells in hand, but there is this one which is very large and has a ghostly glow. It also appears that Coyotito is improving in health just by being in it's presence. Kino screams in excitement which arouses a lot of attention from the surrounding boats. As Kino and Juana enter the town, rumor of the pearl has already spread throughout the small town. Even the doctor that turned them away is very interested about the pearl. Kino however has big plans for his new found wealth, including sending Coyotito to a school. It is at this point in the book where I believe Kino's greed is taking over the originally planned use for the pearl, which is to heal his baby boy. When the doctor pays Kino a visit to check on his baby, he claims that his condition is worsening so he needs to give him a capsule. However after the capsule was given, Coyotito began to seem more ill. That night in fear of someone stealing the pearl, he decides to hide the pearl where the three of them sleep. When someone tried to steal the pearl that night, Kino got into a fight with the man but he got away. When kino and Juana are preparing to sell the pearl, they worry about being cheated because of their lack of knowledge about the worth of the pearl. Kino is angry at the offers the appraisers offered to him. He decides that he is going to sell the pearl at the capital in hope of getting a better deal. Even though he was assaulted and warned by Tomas about going to the capital, he is still adament about his plans. During the middle of the night, Juana tries to get rid of the pearl in the ocean, but Kino follows her, takes back the pearl, and leaves her beaten on the shore. On the way home, Kino is attacked and hurt, but he manages to kill a man. Because of this, their family is forced to flee. There house is on fire and after that many people believe that they are dead, but they are actually hiding out at Tomas's house. They fail in their first attempt, but they eventually escape under the darkness of night. Kino lies to Juana about a disturbing image he sees in the pearl. He actually sees a bloody body, a swollen faced Coyotito, and a sad Juana walking home. There is a very tense moment during the story when three searchmen are approaching them. they are hiding in some brush, and they get very close to them, but they get lucky. Kino makes the flee up the hillside because knows that the men will be back once more to search. During the night Kino tells Juana that she must go to anear town and hide out. In order to stay hidden in the dark, Kino strips down and starts to approach the three campers. He charges the campsite where he kills all three of them. Unknown to Kino, one of the shots fired of hit Coyotito, which had killed him. Completely devastated, Kino and Juana walk into town with Coyotito wrapped up un a blanket over Juana's shoulder. Finally, Kino hurls the pearl into the ocean.

I didn't particularly like the way this book ended. Kino and his family end up fleeing to the mountains. Kino made sure to cover his tracks well, but trackers ended up hunting them down and killing Coyotito. I am not quite sure why trackers were after them in the first place. The author didn't really clarify this. Is it because of the pearl or is it because Kino killed a man? I didn't understand that part.
