Chapter 2 is the beginning of this story. Kino got the pearl Juana was praying so much for the cure of her baby. Chapter 1 was the introduction; chapter 2 is where the story unfolds. I think the pearl is not going to be used for its original purpose. At the end of the chapter, it said Coyotito’s swelling was going away, so the money is probably going to be use for a better living. Like every story, something good happens that leads to the main conflict of the story. The pearl might seem good right now, but I think it will create greater problems for Juanita and Kino. In my opinion, the pearl should be kept a secret for now.

Predict: Chapter two is the part of the rising action. Kino finds the Pearl they need for Coyotito's injury. I predict that the doctor will reject the pearl again also because he will only accept money. I also predict that since Coyotito's swelling is going down and he has not cramped up, that Kino and Juana will not even have to take him to the doctors. Thus, saving them money and using it on something greater such as a different neighborhood to live in. I also predict that the doctor will come back and give Kino and Juana more trouble.

My prediction for the next chapter is that the fishermen will praise him of getting his big pearl. After reaching the shore he will sell his pearl to get some money. After selling his pearl, he will pay the doctor’s bill. I also predict that the money they got from selling the pearl won’t be enough to pay the doctor, just because the doctor is racist against Kino’s people. I also predict that Coyotito will get even worse than he is now. I will predict that the town will also be happy with them of getting the pearl, because getting one that big is only by luck. I also predict that the pearl might bring more trouble to them then they had thought.

Kino and Juana along with Coyotito went home to Kino’s Canoe in search of a pearl. Kino’s canoe had been brought down from generation by his grandparents and he intended on using it to find a pearl which required great luck to find. They went to the part in the ocean where oysters could be found and once they arrived, Kino threw his huge rock, basket, and himself into the water. While Kino was looking for oysters, Juana was praying to the Gods to allow them to find a pearl to pay the doctor. While Kino was looking for big oysters, he found one that was shining and he quickly picked it up and took it to the canoe. Kino and Juana had a look of excitement and couldn't resist opening the big oyster with the shiny gleam inside. When they finally opened it, they found an egg-sized pearl and Kino quickly shouted with excitement which caused the men from the other canoes to head towards Kino’s canoe.

In chapter 2 Kino lays out a blanket on the flooring of his canoe so that Juana can lay Coyotito on it. Coyotito laid quite, but he started swelling on his neck and up to his lower ear, he also started to get feverish. Juana hopes to find a pearl that will pay off a doctor to tend to Coyotito and his scorpion sting. Once they set out into the ocean, they come to an area where oysters lay. Kino sinks to the bottom with a rock tied to his leg, and basket in arms, and starts putting oysters into the basket, hoping that a pearl lay inside. Kino found a large oyster, rose up to the surface, and entered the boat. He then started opening the oyster and inside was the pearl. Juana then uncovered Coyotito and noticed that the swelling was going away.

In chapter two, Kino and Juana set off on a canoe. This canoe is a symbol of non-starvation. For a man with a canoe could promise his wife that she would get to eat something. They were setting off into the Gulf to find pearls from oysters. Kino had been searching and gathering and then he had come up a rather large oyster. He took up all the oysters back to the canoe and then opened them one by one until he had come to the huge oyster and hesitated a bit. When he had open the huge oyster he had found a perfect shaped pearl, and the swelling in Coyotito's shoulder had receded.

In chapter two, Kino and his wife are on a mission to find a pearl. They are on this mission because they need enough money to help cure the baby’s scorpion sting. The interesting thing to me, is that Juana wasn’t praying for anything else but to help find the pear to get the baby’s cure, when she could have been praying for an easy recovery of the baby. I also thought it was very wise of Juana to not be too hopeful and confident for something to happen, because it won’t always go your way, I can connect with that. Eventually Kino finds the pearl and they are extremely happy. In the end the baby seems to be recovering very well. So I think that the pearl will be used for something else.

This chapter was just a little weird. From what I gathered, Kino and Juana went to find a pearl that they could use to pay the doctor with to heal Coyotito. Kino goes down into the water and talks of songs again, something that is getting old pretty quick. He then finds and oyster hidden back out of view. He thinks he sees a glimmer, and then takes it up to the canoe to open. It turns out to be a large pearl, big surprise, and when Juana goes to check the baby, the poison is receding. After this Kino screams, out of happiness, although the way it is described makes it sound a little weird and out of place.

Chapter 2: In this chapter Juana and Kino set off on their canoe to look for pearls or “the pearl”. So they set off and Kino ties a rope to himself and to a rock so he doesn’t get lost. Then he plunges remembering a song about he ocean. He is not alone there are other clam divers. During this time he is holding his breath. He also is caring a basket with him wile he is gathering clams Juana is praying and singing her songs hoping that Kino finds a pearl. Just then Kino sees something shine in the sand he tries to get the pearl but the clam shuts tight so he tosses it in the basket and rushes to the surface. Then with his knife he breaks open the calm and takes out a huge pearl the “the size of a sea gulls eye”. Happily Kino holds it up to the sky. By this time Coyotitos shoulder is looking better and the swelling has gone down.

Predict... In chapter two the predictions of the readers can be expected. Kino is diving for pearls so that he can bribe the doctor to save his only child’s life. While he is diving Juana is praying in the boat with their son whose life is being suspected to end. Kino finally finds a big pearl that is tremendous to their findings. I think that the pearl might have an effect on the health that the family has and it may help them in the future. They will not need the help of the doctor who refused them at first. The pearl might cause a big controversy because it creates good health towards any person who needs it, and deserves it.

Clarify: In chapter two, there were a couple of confusions, but as I read they were clear to me. At first I didn’t understand why Kino was diving into the sea and getting oysters. Then as I read on, he was getting them because he was looking for the special oyster with a pearl inside. Then I noticed that he opened one of the oysters, but there wasn’t a pearl so he threw the oyster back into the sea. I don’t understand why he threw the oyster back; he could have used it for food. Once I was finished reading, I understood the chapter well except for Kino throwing the oysters back into the sea.

Predict:

In Chapter 2, Kino finds a pearl that is worth a lot at the bottom of the ocean. When searching for the pearl, he knows his wife is praying for him in the family's hand down, generation after generation canoe. When he brings the shell to the surface, and finds the pearl in it, everyone is filled with joy. However, he sees that Coyotito's shoulder is swelling down. Maybe when he sucked the poison out, he got it all, and the child is perfectly fine again. When he shows his wife the beautiful pearl, she howls with joy, and all the fisherman around gather around their boat. I predict one of the neighbors will steal the pearl. It could possibly be one of the most valuable things that is in the community and it could be sold for a great deal of money.

In chapter two, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito reach a turning point. Kino's discovery of the pearl is a big thing. Juana had been praying that they find a pearl to pay for a doctor to take care of Coyotito's scorpion-stung shoulder. However, they may not need to use it as payment after all because the swelling started to recede. If they do not use the pearl to pay for a doctor's treatment, just imagine all the other comforts it could bring. I see the pearl as a symbol of hope. I'd also like to add that I really like how Kino hears music in everything. I think that's really cool and it tells us a little about his character.

In chapter 2 Kino finds a great pearl. Why does Juana pray for Kino to find such a pearl to pay for the doctor to cure Coyotito? Why not pray directly for Coyotito’s safety? When Kino brings the large oyster to the surface, why does he carry it separate from the rest? Isn’t he worried that the luck will go away? At the end of chapter two Kino cries out, why does he cry out? Why do the other pearl hunters rush to him?

Chapter two is the beginning of lots of things. It is the beginning of wealth, power, and conflicts. I believe that Kino and his wife Juana are going to sell the pearl to get money to have a better lifestyle since Coyotito was healed by the pearl. I also think that the pearl will give them power because the pearl seems to have some kind of healing power. There might be conflicts with people that might want to have the pearl, since it is very big and has some kind of healing power.

Chapter 2 was when the story was really beggining. It showed how much Juana and Kino loved their baby, and how they were willing to do anything for him. They both got on their little canoe in search for a pearl to help pay for the doctor. Juana put some brown seaweed on Coyotito's shoulder to help the pain go away. When they were in the ocean Kino went down in search for Pearls. One oyster caught his eyes,he took it and went back up. They wanted to oen that one last but Juana couldn't wait and Kino opened it. It was a very pretty pearl, like they said "perfect as the moon"

In chapter two, Kino has made a great discovery. With a passed down canoe, Kino and his wife Juana along with their baby, travels into the sea in search of pearls. Coyotito is suffering from the bite of the scorpion and Kino and Juana is hoping they find a nice pearl so that they can pay the doctor to heal Coyotito. As Kino dives into the sea, he is weighed down by a rock that will aid him when he collects the oysters. He fills his basket with oysters but, as he is about to go back up he finds a large secluded oyster with a gleaming object inside. This catches his eye so he retrieves the shell and holds it close to him as he releases himself from the rock and floats back to the surface. He puts the large oyster in the canoe and gives Juana an excited look. Juana puts her happiness aside because she believes you shouldn’t want something to much. As they open the shell they find a perfectly large round pearl. As they look to Coyotito, they find that the swelling has reduced. Kino and Juana yells in happiness and this catches other diver’s attention so they row towards Kino’s canoe. I predict that word will get out about the pearl and eventually travel to the doctor. I predict that the doctor wants the pearl and will try to steal it from Kino’s family.

Summary/Prediction: In chapter 2, Kino had used a canoe passed down from his family to search for pearls in the ocean, he was accompanied by his wife Juana and his son who had been stung by a scorpion Coyotito. Kino had tied a rock to a basket, and jumped into the ocean. He searched for oysters until he found a great large oyster and brought it back up to the boat. He pulled out a short knife and opened the oyster. There Kino and Juana stared at the great moon like shape pearl. Juana then looked at Coyotito and noticed that the swelling had gone down. I predict that in the next chapter Kino will think of ways to use the pearl for a better life since Coyotito is starting to recover from the scorpion sting.

Chapter two gives me more of a description of Kino and Juana's job. He must have great lungs because he has to stay underwater for a while just to gather some pearls. I thought he was pretty lucky to find this amazing pearl, but this book doesn't seem so promising. It seems as if the people of the town, including the doctor, will bring trouble for Kino and his family. And it is good that Kino and Juana will get married in the church and be official. But I think the priest will cause the most trouble because he seemed like he was desperate for the pearl to be apart of the church, and now that Kino is rich, the doctor will be his friend until his money runs out, and then the doctor will be the same as he was before, and just ignore the people. And I also predict that the baby will survive, because he beat the odds, and I think they will start being more protective of him for the future, to refrain from something like this happening again.

Chapter 2 is where the story truly begins. It starts off with Kino and Juana going out to the sea in search for a pearl that would pay for their sons treatment for his scorpion sting. After Kino sinks down to the ocean floor he begins looking for his prayed for pearl that could fix everything. While Kino searched for a pearl, Juana was above praying and hoping for Kino to find a pearl. When soon enough Kino sees an extraordinary sized shell away from the others. Kino grabs the shell and swims to the top to show Juana. Kino then pries the shell open only to discover the most magnificent pearl ever. Kino thought to himself that it was about the size of a gooses' egg! Although this obstacle was almost easily overcome I believe even greater problems are on their way for Kino and Juana.

In chapter 2 Juana and Kino were starting to worry because their son was not getting better from the scorpion bite. They were going home in the canoe when Kino saw an oyster in the water he jumped out. Juana wanted it to have a pearl. She worried though that if she prayed to much it wouldn’t happen. So when they opened the pearl it had a huge pearl. Also the babys swelling was going down. That must have meant that juana sucked out most of the poison. He was so happy by all of this the he leaned back let out a loud yell of happiness. Then all of the other men in their canoes raced over to see what was going on.

In chapter 2 of The Pearl Kino goes pearl diving. He pulled his boat into the water and got in it. Juana and Coyotito went with him. Before they had left Juana put seaweed on Coyotito’s bite to try and heel it. They rowed out until they found a good spot. Kino dived down with a rock tied to his foot and a basket in his hand. He breaks off several clams before he noticed a glisten nearby. It had come from a huge clam. He threw it in his basket and rose to the surface. He pulls up the basket and starts to open the clams. He looks at the big one and decides to open it last. Juana sees the way he looked at it and tells him to open it. He opens it and finds a pearl the size of a seagull egg. He and Juana are really excited. They pull off the seaweed to look at Coyotito’s bite and see that the swelling was gone.

After they found the pearl, the poison was receding in the baby and that luck had struck them. It seems like the pearl was just the beginning of their luck. I predict that in the next chapter, they might sell the pearl or it might cause problems between them. It is very difficult to predict whether it will help them or make their life worse. I think John Steinbeck wants to make you think what significance the Pearl will have for the chapters to come.

Devastated by the doctors decision in chapter one, Kino and Juana head over to the beach in hopes of finding a large enough pearl to pay off the doctor. While searching the sea floor for oysters, Kino spots a huge oyster with what seems to be a pearl inside. Prying the huge oyster off the rocks Kino prays to the gods that the pearl will be great enough to help his baby. When Kino resurfaces he quickly prys the large oyster open to find an egg sized pearl. Luckily, baby Coyotito's swelling went down and there might be no need for he doctor's surfaces after all.

In chapter two, after Kino and his wife get turned away by the Doctor, they head to the ocean in search of pearls. Finding or harvesting pearls is how Kino’s family has provided for themselves for generations. Kino is really motivated to make a find so that he can generate money to treat Coyotito’s scorpion bite. Kino and Juana are boarding the boat to search for pearls and they notice that the swelling on Coyotito’s arm is going down. They are a little relieved but Kino is still focused on making a find. Kino is diving and spots a large oyster lying by itself under a little overhang. He saw a gleam and the oyster closed down. Kino gets it back to the canoe and once he opens it he is astonished! It is the biggest pearl in the world. Kino and Juana are ecstatic. Juana checks on Coyotito and tells Kino the swelling was going down and the poison was subsiding. Full of emotion, Kino senses his luck may be changing.

In Chapter two, Kino and Juana go out to fish for pearls in the Gulf. Juana prays hard, not for Coyotito to get better, but for them to find a pearl so they can pay the doctor to help the baby. I predict in this chapter they will find a pearl, not just a pearl, but the one that is “as large as a seagull’s egg and as perfect as the moon,” like it says on the back of the book. Hopefully, they will be able to cash in the pearl and not only be able to get the doctor to help Coyotito, but to actually maybe leave the poor village that their in and live somewhere better. I predict that the pearl will bring both joys and dangers to their lives. Something good might happen, like being able to live in a better place, or something bad.

Chapter two starts out by describing there location and setting at the beach. Kino, Juana, and Coyotito all get in the canoe hoping to find some pearls to help pay the doctor to help there baby. While opening the clams that they have collected, they are all shocked by what they find. A beautiful pearl, "as perfect as the moon"! Neither of them can believe what they have found. When Juana checks on little Coyotito, she finds that the poultice she has made out of seaweed is working, Coyotitos swelling has gone down. This foreshadows that the pearl will probably be used to help better there lives.

This chapter does talk about the finding of the pearl and obviously Kino and Juana's optimism about it. They feel that it has helped Coyotito's swelling at the end and that it will help them financially. I wanted to look at Juana though, because she's a very interesting character at this point. On page 15, the second paragraph, it talks mostly about what Juana is doing. She makes a poultice out of it to help Coyotito's wound and she takes care of him quietly. It seems that she is kept to the tradition of only women caring for the child and I think she is very self sufficient. She seems like she could take care of herself without much trouble and I admire that.

The Second Chapter, which sets us up for the rest of the story, is basically when Kino finds the great pearl, the pearl that can save his family from peril. Again he sings, his way of praying in a way, that he will find great luck and find a pearl. As a big pearl as they have found is rather rare, and their whole community is rather gossipy, I am predicting that before Kino evens finds a use for whatever money comes out of the pearl, that the community will try to do their part in getting money from the pearl. With Kino’s great success, there will probably be grave consequences, depending on how he spends it. I am hoping that Kino spends the money for his community or on his child, which still may not be healed even with the riches found. There is still the question of whether or not the doctor, if needed, will accept them even now.

For my response about chapter two, I decided to choose predict.
In chapter two of, The Pearl, it starts out with Kino’s idea to go out to sea and find payment for the doctor to help his son. So I predict that as hes going out to sea that maybe he’ll find more than what he was looking for. I predict that because of the doctor’s cruel response to his family, Kino with take revenge on him after he helps Coyotito. I predict that when he fins a peal it wil change their lifes forever, and that it might cause some problems in the future. I predict that because Coyotito’s puncture began to heal up, that they might not need the the doctor and use the pearl as a way of growing out of their poor class and move somewhere more plesent and safer for their son. I also predict that the pearl will change their lives and will deside the fate of the rest of the stories out come.

In the second chapter, Kino decided to go look for pearls inside the ocean so that he would be able to pay the doctor. While he was collecting oysters, he found one huge oyster laying by itself. Kino got very excited and took it with him to show his wife, Juana. Based on Kino's discovery, I can predict that he will take that pearl and keep it a secret because it's very strange that when he found the pearl, Coyotito's swelling went away. Maybe that pearl is worth a lot, and therefore if someone finds out that they have it, they might face great conflicts. I can also preadict that many great tings will begin to happen in Kino and his family's lfe.

In chapter two, Juana and Kino set out to find the pearl that will help them persuade the doctor to treat the poisoned Coyotito. Kino and Juana take a canoe and paddle in the sea in search for pearls. While he is in the ocean he sees other canoes and competes and tries to find the biggest pearl before they do, to save his son. He finds many oysters, including one especially large one that has a sort of "ghostly gleam." He works to open all of the oysters to see if there is a pearl big enough of them to offer the doctor. After opening all of them and only finding a small series of pearls Juana convinces him to open the biggest one-the one with the "ghostly gleam." When he finally opens it he finds the biggest pearls either of them had ever laid eyes on, they were sure this would convince the doctor.

Well, after the introduction of all of the characters and the first problem, we move on to Chapter 2. In this chapter Kino has found the pearl. Also, Coyotito's swelling is going down which is a good thing for Kino and Juana. Since they don't need to pay the doctor, I think that Kino will either use the money for himself or on the entire family. Also, I think that maybe something will happen in the future and that since the pearl will probably be used already, they'll regret not saving it for an emergency. Who knows, maybe he might end up losing the pearl. Thats my take on the story so far.

This paragraph was kind of suspenseful because now there is no one to help Coyotito, and he is swelling in his shoulder. After the family is rejected by the doctor, the family gets in their canoe and floats out to sea. Kino had come out to gather clams to search for pearls, which I’m guessing is to try and buy a checkup from the stubborn doctor. So Kino dives down and begins searching and soon comes across the biggest clam he had ever seen. He picks it up and swims to the surface with excitement because he already knows it has a giant pearl inside it. So Kino jumps in the canoe and splits it open, and a giant pearl is revealed. Kino howled in excitement, and then Juana discovers Coyotito’s swelling went down.

I predict that in chapter two Kino will go out in search for the pearl he is in desperate need of for his son. I think that Kino will go out by the seashore and search the beach sand looking for clams. Juana of course will go out and help Kino because by what the story describes her she seems to be very kind and useful. I think they would leave their son with Kino’s brother, Juan Tomas and his wife Apolonia. I believe Kino will find a pearl and will immediately go to give it to the doctor for payment. I think that Coyototi will get better by then and Kino will be able to keep the pearl and use it for many good things.

PREDICT: I predict that after finding this pearl, the family will use it to pay for the doctor. The doctor will probably feel hesitant to see them and all, since they are from the brush houses. But, he will see them now that they have enough from the value of the huge pearl. Coyotito will soon get cured. The left over money that he doesn't use the family will probably use for a more pleasant life. I think they will get used to living the good life, but will eventually run out of money.

In shapter 2, their is something bad that is still happening. It is coyotito's sting from the scorpion. In this chapter Juana begins to pray that Kino would fingd a pearl so they Kino would be able to pay the doctor to heal coyotito. they went out in search for the pearl and found the pearl with the oyster. As they recieve the Pearl Kino and Juana notice that coyotito's swelling has gone down. If i was in this situation, i would not pay the doctor because he is already being healed and just save the pearl for more things. Or save it.

Well I am commenting on Kenna Sandberg's post. She didn't understand why Kino threw the oyster back into the ocean. I believe,Kenna, that they have no use for the oyster if it doesn't have a pearl in it. They are not food collectors. They are pearl collectors. I also think that the empty oyster shells would just be taking up space on the small Canoe. Space that they could be using for Oysters that did have pearls in them.

Kino and Juana must be full of excitement and relief. It seems like their baby is getting better and they have just been blessed with a giant and beautiful pearl that could really benefit them. Now that Coyotito is getting better, they can use the pearl on whatever they want. Their worries are over. Their poor life is over. They can begin a better life.

ch.2 notes

In this second chapter, Kino and Juana are trying to find a pearl of higher value to pay the doctor with. They paddle out to sea in search of oysters to capture the pearls from them. Kino was under the water for over two minutes. When he comes up, he brings with him an enormous oyster with a ghostly glow. They find an enormous pearl within the shell, and it seems to be helping coyotito's wounds just by it's presence.Kino makes a lot of noise out of excitement which attracts a lot of attention.
