In this chapter Kino and Juana return to their village and tell everyone of what they plan to do with the pearl. Although they went in looking for it because of the baby, is seems to be very low on their list now. All Kino talks about is getting married to Juana and buying a gun and sending his son to school. He talks as if his son is already healthy again, and he seems to be recovering. When the doctor hears about the pearl, he goes to treat the baby, but when he seems to be recovering, he gives him a pill which makes the bay sick again. He comes back and saves the baby, and asks about paying the bill. I think the pill was more poison which the doctor used to get more money from the family, and Kino seams to suspect this although he does not voice it.

Summary/Prediction: Kino had just found a great pearl and taken it back to his house. All the neighbors hear of the news and surround his house. He talks of getting married to Juana, sending his son Coyotito to school to get an education, and that he is going to buy a gun. The news of Kino getting a pearl travels through the town. The doctor hears of it and visits Kino and Juana saying that he wasn’t home earlier and that he would like to take a look at the baby. The doctor lies about Coyotito being sick and gives him a pill, which I think was to get the baby sick again. He comes back an hour later to cure the baby of his “sickness” and all that his happening Kino suspects that the doctor is trying to make money off of him. I predict that in the next chapter Kino will have to sell his pearl to pay the doctor and when he tries to sell the pearl, the pearl dealers try to cheat him for less money.

In the beginning of Chapter 3 Kino and Juana are walking home after finding the perfect pearl. They are amazed how quickly people in the village already knew of Kino’s find. Kino’s mind is racing at the potential of all the things he will be able to do with the money that the pearl will bring. He dreams of buying new equipment, marrying Juana in the church, buying new clothes and being able to get Coyotito an education. Kino is hearing good songs from the pearl. He is feeling optimistic and positive karma. They arrive home and find the neighbors and priest. They had all come unannounced. The priest’s visit was to encourage Kino and Juana to get married, pray, and donate to the church. Then the priest and neighbors left. The Dr. who had refused to treat Coyotito showed up. He lied about the circumstances surrounding their attempt to get Coyotito treated after the scorpion bit him. Kino let him because he was worried about Coyotito’s condition. The Dr. tried to con Kino into turning the pearl over to him for safekeeping. Kino refused. The Dr. questions Kino about where he is keeping the pearl. Kino is suspicious and during the night someone breaks into their home. Kino attacks the burglar but gets hit in the head. The burglar escapes without the pearl. Kino and Juana discuss the risks of having the pearl. Juana is worried that it will bring them bad luck. Kino convinces her that everything will be alright.

The news of Kino's discovery spreads quickly throughout town. Suddenly, everybody wants to be his friend. The pearl brought out the evil in everybody in the town; it clouded their minds with envy and greed. They all wanted the pearl for their own personal benefit, they all imagined all the things they could gain with the pearl. At first, Kino and Juana were oblivious to this evil; they were just happy they could provide for their baby. Then when all the neighbors crowd in and ask what he will do with his wealth, Kino gets sucked into the same evil greediness and gives in to the little unimportant things he wants. That broke down the barriers between need and want. Now that Kino has decided on such wild things, he has made a plan of it and must make it come true; it will make or break him.

Evaluate: In Chapter 3 the word of Kino’s findings starts to spread to everyone around the town. Everyone believes that Kino will share with him or her, because he was once longing for money as they are. After the word gets around to the doctor he suddenly wants to help Coyotito with the scorpion bite. He goes to Juana and Kino and announces that he will help the baby, but he has to give him treatment. Soon after the doctor leaves Coyotito gets very sick and everyone in the village is worried. The doctor finally gets to their home and saves the small child. He is also expecting pay and wants to take this Pearl of the World from Kino for himself. That night an intruder comes into their house and Kino protects his family and the pearl by going after the person with a knife.

Summarize/ Question/Predict: In chapter 3 Kino and family came back from finding the "Pearl of the World". As they come back the whole village has already heard about it and shares with each other about what they individually would do with it had they found it instead. Many of the villagers attitudes change toward Kino's family. A couple of examples are the doctor, the beggars, and the priest. The doctor changes his mind and decides that he can help Coyotito. In the beginning he did not help Kino's baby because he knew their background was poor. The beggars knew that they had something good in store since Kino came from rock bottom he'd know how the beggars felt and he'd give to the alms. And finally the priest changed his outlook on Kino because he suddenly started fretting about whether he had baptized their baby or even marrried them. This just shows how greedy this little town is. I predict that this pearl will destroy the town and Kino's family. My question is what do you think Kino will end up doing with the pearl? Will he sell it and use the money on getting married, getting the rifle, and giving Coyotito an education? Or will he destroy it or use it for something else?

In chapter 3 it began with the spreading of news around the whole town about Kino’s pearl. Kino was telling his brother and the neighbors that when he would sell the pearl, he would get Coyotito an education, he and his wife would get married, he’d get new clothes, and a rifle. The priest had found out about Kino’s pearl and so he went to visit Kino to tell him to don’t forget to thank who gave him the fortune. Kino began to worry about the neighbors trying to destroy the dreams he had about what he would do after he sold the pearl because he sense forces that might oppose him. After the priest left the doctor who denied Coyotito came and told Kino that he was now ready to cure Coyotito. The doctor gave Coyotito medicine to cure the poison and told Kino that after an hour the poison would attack Coyotito and the he’d try his best to save him. After the doctor finished curing Coyotito, he told Kino about how he was going to get paid and Kino replied that he’d pay him once he has sold his pearl. Once everyone had left, Kino buried the pearl under his sleeping mat and went to sleep. Kino woke up to the sound of a noise he heard in a dark corner of his house and he pounced at it with his knife. Kino struck the person in the dark, but the person in the dark hit Kino in the head so hard that he started bleeding. When the robber had left, Juana told Kino that they should get rid of the pearl because it will destroy them, but Kino refused.

In chapter three, the news of the pearl spread in La Paz like wildfire. Everyone is informed even before Kino and Juana get to their hut. The doctor as predicted came to see the baby with an excuse why he had not seen him earlier. Juana and Kino shouldn’t have let him treat his son because I think the baby was already well without the doctors help. The doctor gave the white powder to have those effects on Coyotito that way he would be paid with the money of the pearl. The chapter ends with Kino’s hope of selling the pearl.

In chapter 3 the whole town had begun to like Kino. The reason for this was because of the pearl. Kino had seen benefits in finding this pearl. In the pearl, Kino had seen his family in clothing and in shoes. He also saw a harpoon for himself. Kino has also seen Coyotito at a desk at school.

In chapter 3 the word that they found the “pearl of the world” spread quickly. Everyone asked what they would do with it. Kino looked in the pear and saw his familys future. He saw all of them having new clothes, he and Juana getting married in the church and him sending his son to school. Unfortunately the doctor heard of Kinos fortune and went over and offered to cure his son because sometimes scorpion venom was weird. It would seem like it was gone but BAM it would come back. So the let him lokk at their son and he “cured” him. Kino said he would pay the bill after he cashed his pearl. The doctor asked and he said he had hidden it. Later that night someone broke into his house and tried to steal the pearl but they got scared and left. Juana tried to get Kino to get rid of the pearl but he said it would all be ok.

Evaluate: In chapter three, there are a few things that catch the eye of the reader. First off, when Kino finds the Pearl of The World, everyone in the village is interested in his finding. The pearl is worth a lot of money and the towns people felt as if it was their own. They imagined what they could do if they possessed the pearl. The doctor hears about Kino’s find and decides to help the baby’s wound to receive something valuable in return. I believe the only reason why the doctor helped the baby was to posses the pearl for himself. The Pearl has brought evil to everyone in the village and has the people thinking of only themselves. The people in the village shouldn’t think for themselves so much, but be happy for Kino and his family for their wonderful finding of the pearl.

Clarifies: Kino has indeed found the pearl but not in the way I predicted as in the pervious chapter notes. Kino’s discovery of the pearl spread far and wide. The reason was because the pearl was given the name “the pearl of the world,” due to its size. The discovery spread as far as to the doctors ears. He angered me because he began bragging how Kino was his customer and how he was tending Coyotito’s injury. In reality he didn’t care before he heard of the pearls size. I hate how he visualized his future from the wealth the pearl would bring him! Kino said the poison was less effecting Coyotito so there was no need of his services. The doctor checked on him anyways and then proceeded to give Coyotito some white powder to cure him from the poison because it was in his head or something and that they would not notice anything until it was to late. Kino was suspicious of the powder. After that Coyotito began gravely ill and the doctor cured him just as he said he would return to check up on him. I think the doctor gave him poison in the first place because he feared that if Kino did not need his services he would not get paid. The doctor watched Kino carefully to see where his eyes would wonder to see the direction he had placed the pearl. Once everyone left Kino placed the pearl under his mat for safety. Later on Kino and Juana were almost robbed. I believe this was the doctor.

I think Kino will keep and sell the pearl. When he stood, starring at the pearl he played out all the good it could bring. He played everything out, and he liked what he saw. He wants the best for his child, and that's why I think he'll keep and sell the pearl. Plus, he wants to keep Juana happy and giver her the best as well. Also, he wanted that rifle. Quite badly too, and when someone wants something badly, they usually go for it.

The doctor and his assistant come to the house to examine Coyotito he then says that his condition might worsen so they will come back in one hour. Coyotito worsens and the doctor returns with a potion. That night Kino hid the pearl under his sleeping mat. He heard an intruder and grabbed his knife he then vigorously stabbed the intruder.

The third chapter was about how Kino planned to use the pearl. Kino was looking forward to use some of the money to send his son to school so he could be educated. He also thought of never feeling hunger, unsecured, and afraid. Kino planned to sell the pearl the next day but juana wanted to get rid of it. Before Juana told Kino to get rid of it the doctor went to their home to cure the baby. I believe the doctor went because he was interested in the pearl. I predict that something will happen when Kino sells the pearl. I think that the evil songs that Kino hears actually mean something.

In chapter four, I predict that there will be people wanting and attempting to steal Kino’s pearl, even the doctor will try too. I predict that the pearl buyers will try to give Kino a low price for his big pearl. I also predict that Kino’s dreams for his future will only be dreams. I predict that setting his hopes to high will be his downfall. I predict that Juana just doesn’t care about the pearl because it has brought bad things with it. So the pearl may get lost and never be found.

The beginning of this chapter starts of where the last chapter ends, Kino had just found the pearl and was heading back to the village. Word spread fast that Kino had found the "Pearl of the World", people were trying to figure out how to get their half of the fortune. Kino seemed to have his own plans, thinking it through he said he wanted to get married to Juana, buy a rifle, for his son to be in school. Later the doctor came to see Kino's son, Kino was extremely angry because of what happen when he asked for help before. The doctor convinced Kino that his son might not be healed, Kino trusted him and let him see the baby. The doctor gave the baby a pill that made the baby sick, Kino grew very suspicious. Kino seems suspicious about everyone ever since he found the pear, I think it's because now Kino needs to know who is truly there for him and who's there just for the money.

With everybody around his house, Kino becomes suspicious when he starts to hear the song of evil and enemy. Later after the doctor hears that they have found a magnificent pearl and comes to check on the baby. Kino tells him the baby is getting better on its own, but the doctor insists on seeing him. The doctor tells Kino that the poison is still there and will get worse with time. He gives Coyotito a powder that he says will help him, but it really just makes him sick so the doctor can come back and cure it. Then he asks Kino when he will pay him and kino decides that he will sell the pearl to pay the doctor. Kino decides to hide the pearl by berrying it at the corner of his hut.

In this chapter, news has spread about Kino’s pearl. Due to the fact that the pearl is magnificent and large, everyone is craving for the chance take a hold of it. Kino is cautious about the pearl, but he talks about what he is going to do with it. Kino says that he is going to get married in a church with beautiful clothes, send his son to school and maybe buy a rifle. He talks about this with his people until the doctor comes. The doctor has heard of the pearl and arrives at Kino’s brush house to cure Coyotito. Juana and Kino told the doctor about Coyotito’s condition but, the doctor insisted that the poison will kick in. So Kino and Juana decided to give Coyotito the treatment. I predict that Kino will destroy the pearl eventually because like Juana said something so great must be destroyed before it will ruin the family.

Summary/Prediction: Well, Kino a Juana finally return home. Once they are all comfortable, Kino tells pretty much tells the whole village what he plans to do with the pearl. The baby must be back to full health because Kino has forgotten the one purpose he has the pearl in the first place: the baby. As soon as the people here about this, they're minds began to think about all of the stuff they could do with the pearl. Another person who hears this is the doctor. Since he knows Kino and Juana can pay him, he makes a visit to the baby. Instead of curing the baby like he is supposed to, he gives the baby medicine to make him even sicker. To me that shows how much greed the town has. I predict that later in the book that the baby is giong to die. The cause will most likely be the doctor. It is really sad to think that Coyotito will have no chance to live his life.

In this chapter, Kino tells the neighbors about his dreams for what he is going to do with the pearl. He talks about his son and how he could now afford to go to school and be fairly educated. He also talks about his whole family’s future, their plans, and how their outlook in life would be positive. Then, the doctor soon gets the word that Kino has found the world’s biggest pearl, so he sets out to look for him. When he gets to their brush house, he pretends that he doesn’t know anything about pearl and acts with false surprise that Kino has found the greatest pearl ever. The doctor then cares for Coyotito because he wants the pearl to himself, and then leaves. That night, Kino and Juana hear someone in their house digging and looking for the pearl and Kino gets outraged and gets up, but the stranger leaves.

In the chapter it states that news spreads very rapidly, which is expected from such a small town. Of course, like all new good things, everyone who hears about it wants to be somehow associated with the people who have come into good fortune. I don't believe that what Kino wishes for is greed when he speaks of wedding Juana and sending his son to school. Are those not things we would wish we could do had we none of them? I don't understand what could possibly be so wrong with wanting to have a better life than you have when you have lived through it with close to nothing. The evil Juana speaks of is not greed and wanting things, it's the change in the state of mind. Letting material possesions cloud your judgement and thought, that is what she wishes to prevent.

Kino had just found this amazing pearl, and everyone had heard about it now in the town because word travels so fast. Soon, everyone wanted to have Kino as a client and they all wondered what he was going to do with the pearl. He told everybody that he was going to officially marry Juana. Everyone became jealous and hateful because they wanted that pearl. And then the doctor wanted them as a client. I think that Kino is being very unwise, and I think that he has an idea of what everyone is feeling, but he's putting it to the back of his head because he doesn't want to worry about it. I think that the pearl will cause more trouble than Kino and Juana can manage. Especially with the doctor, because as soon as he heard, then he demanded that they were clients. And then he set up that whole thing with the white powder and the fake illness. I think that the doctor will be more trouble than anyone, now that he knows the pearl's location.

In this chapter, Kino and Juana had very different thoughts about the pearl. Kino, was obsessed over keeping the pearl because he said that the pearl would allow them to succeed. Juana didn't agree with that idea and she told Kino to get rid of the pearl, but Kino strongly refused. He kept telling her that, that was their chance to become better people and for their son to go to school and to not be like them. Even though, Coyotito was still not completely recovered, Kino was already thinking about getting married and doing a number of things that didn't have much to do with Coyotito's health. I personally feel that Kino is becoming a little ambitious because he had never felt like he had power. Now that he does have it he doesn't really know how to handle it.

Everyone is town desires the pearl, including the doctor who had turned them down. Juana and Kino, however, decided to ignore everyones ignorance. They invited family and friends and Kino seemed to change a lot. When asked what he was going to do with the fortune he replied by saying he wanted a proper marriage in a church, new clothing for the family, and a better lifestyle. He also pointed out the fact that he wanted Coyotito to have a better education. When night time hits, the doctor surprisingly pays a visit to their home and checks on Coyotito. He gives him medicine and announces that he will be back in an hour. Kino all of a sudden, becomes very protective over the pearl and buries it as soon as he leaves. He fantasizes about getting married to Juana is a church with new clothes. Juana would have shoes and a new shirt while he would have white clothes and lace up shoes. He also imagined about buying a new harpoon and a hunting rifle. To add on he explained putting Coyotito in school with a jacket. He became happy over the subject because if his son becomes familiar with English and math, then that could open up a whole new world to Kino’s people. Along with this, Kino took Coyotito to the doctor. The doctor gives Coyotito a pill because he insists that he still has poison in his system. But to me, I think it was a scam. I think it was to get more money out of the family.

In chapter 3, I learned about the word of Kino's pearl spreading around the town. The doctor that originally had rejected Kino, went to his house to treat Coyotito. After treating the baby, the doctor asks Kino what he will receive for the treatment. However, Kino declines and the doctor watched his eyes, where Kino looks toward the place where the Pearl is buried. When everyone leaves the hut, Kino unburies the pearl, and reburies it under his sleeping mat. That night, an intruder comes in and tries to steal the pearl, but Kino awakes and attacks the intruder. The intruder escapes, and Juana rushes to her husbands side to treat his wounds.

In chapter 3, Kino and Juana return to the town in shock. It was a break in luck for them and they were shocked. I think this is the beginning of their luck. They both went to go get the baby treated and the doctor took them in. The doctor is very cruel so the pill he gave the baby was just a way to make the family have to keep paying which was very unfair. The doctor is a scammer and he should not do this to them

I found this chapter very interesting. I couldn't tell if the doctor was lying about what he said about the baby's illness and how it was going to get worse even though Coyotito was showing signs of getting better. I thought that maybe the doctor just heard about the pearl and decided to go to Kino and to make some money. But when he saw Coyotito getting better, he gave him the capsule of white powder to make him worse. Finally, he gave Coyotito the real medicine and he was cured. But then again, i could be wrong and the doctor could be telling the truth.
