When the Indians tried to market their pearls as a group, they got cheated. They got a man to take all their pearls to the capital to sell and sent him off. The man never returned and the pearls were lost. This happened twice before they Indians abandoned the idea. They were ripped off by a greedy man probably not of their race. This idea was a failure.

The town was not literally infected with poison, but as Juana said, the pearl brought evil. The pearl brought out the worst in everybody. It made them greedy and selfish. Suddenly, everybody wanted to be Kino's best friend. People tried to cheat Kino. They tried to steal from him. They used violence. They even went to extremes and ruined his canoe then burned his house down. It doesn't get much lower than that. So, the poison that infected this town was jealousy, greed, and selfishness.

What does Steinbeck mean when he says that a great deal can be learned about a man from the tilt of his hat? When Steinbeck says that a man can change because a tilt of a hat he means that a man can change who he is because of a life-changing event. Kino finds the Pearl of the World, which is a very significant finding. The others of the village all think that Kino will be the good man he is. Kino ends up not wanted to share any of the money that he will get from the pearl because he wants it for himself, Juana, and Coyotito. His selfishness is an act of a greedy man, which Kino is not. Everyone knows him as a loving man who cares for others and would help others in his village. This change would be the tilt of his hat.

What is the significance of squinting the eyes? The significance of squinting the eyes is that it could keep Kino together. It was used as a defense towards others. It helped Kino stay whole when he was talking to the dealer. When Kino was squinting his eyes he did it so that the dealers could not break him. Kino knew that the dealers would try to get the lowest prices for the pearl, so he kept his eyes squinted. He was squinting his eyes, till the dealers said that the pearl was worthless, then he lost it.

Question #1: "How was the town infected with a poison, just as Coyotito?"
Adding on to Elexis, the town was not literally infected with a poison but had been infected with greed and selfishness. The villagers had been effected by the Pearl and the "side effects" being greed, violence, and deceit. This "poison" could end up "killing" the town unless properly treated. Maybe such as destroying the pearl? If not, somewhat like Coyotito, it could become deadly. By deadly meaning the town could break out in violence over the pearl or isolation. Coyotito's poison was a metaphor to the greed the pearl had caused and how it "infected" the town.

Question 1: How is the town infected with a poison just like Coyotito was?

As soon as Kino found the pearl the entire town was buzzing with the news of the largest pearl find ever. Everyone was consumed with the thought of the most valuable pearl being found by one of their townsmen. Everyone was lining up to try and benefit from Kino’s potential fortune. They all wanted a piece of the action. Everyone’s greediness was infectious and poisonous. Nothing good would come from all this popularity and attention towards Kino

How is the town infected with a poison, just as Coyotito was?
When the whole town found out that Kino had found a rare pearl, they all began to imagine what they would do if they had it. The way Kino got poisoned was by being greedy now that he has a rare pearl because he wants the money for his family and not for anybody else. The pearl has caused people to want to steal it from Kino during his sleep and causing bloody fights. The doctor was poisoned because when he heard of Kino’s success, he began to imagine Paris and that caused him to go cure Coyotito because now he knows that Kino is wealthy. When Kino didn’t have the pearl, the doctor refused to help out his son, but now that Kino has a pearl, the doctor has became attracted to it. The priest also came when he found out that Kino had found a pearl and he told Kino that it is wise to thank the person who helped him find his fortune. The priest wants Kino to donate the pearl to the church, but what Kino wants to do is to get married.

What happened when the Indians attempted to market their pearls collectively, as a group? The man who was supposed to sell their pearls in the capital cheated the Indians. They gave their pearls to another man to sell them in the capital; unfortunately, they never saw the man again with the pearls. The Indians for a second time did this again, and again the second man took the pearls. The Indians have now changed the way they sell their pearls in order to not be cheated. The Indians being from the lower class are always going to be cheated because they are considered ignorant and helpless. Even their own people from their town cheat them because it is the easiest thing to do.

How was the town infected with a poison, just as Coyotito was? the true meaning of this question isn that the whole town was did not actually get bit by the scorpion. The meaning is that once Kino had the pearl many people tried to get close to him and become friends. But at the same time many people just got mad at him and got jealous because he has this great pearl. If you think about it closely, the town wasn't hurting Kino and Juana. The towns people were hurting them self due to their own jealously.

Question # 1 - How is the town infected with a poison, just as Coyotito was?

Well, the town was not lirterally infected. In fact, the infection of a poison is a metaphor to show that the people have gone crazy over the pearl. The people are all jealous of Kino for he had found a great big beautiful pearl. He was going to be super rich and everybody wanted the pearl for their self-benefit. The pearl had brought out the evil and greed in the villagers. The poison is not really poison but actually is the hatred and greed of the villagers.

When it says that the town was infected with poison like Coyotito it was a figure of speech saying that the pearl was like poison. The whole town had heard about it and they all grew curious and jealous. It was like the whole towns jealousy grew bigger and fatter just like coyotitos bite did. I think that they all grew so jealous because hey were all so poor. They needed the money too. Now Kino would be able to get married, send his son to school, and even buy new clothing for his family. Some people even grew so jealous that they tried to steal it. This scared Juana and she wanted to turn it back into the sea. She said it was like a sin that will destroy them.

Kino and Juana finding the pearl was like the scorpion's bite. The town spreading the news was like the venom spreading. Then the town became very greedy and started thinking about the pearl and the wealth for themselves. They pretty much all turned against each other in hopes of getting the pearl. Most importantly, Kino became every one's enemy. That selfishness and craziness is like the swelling from the poison.

What is the significance of squinting the eyes? The significance is that Kino used this as his defense to not be cheated by the dealers. He kept squinting his eyes so the dealer could see he would not give to just any offer. The dealer gave him a low price and saw the seriousness that Kino had. I believe this was also Kino’s guard to prevent his anger getting the best of him. If Kino could he probably would have knocked the dealer out cold but most likely quickly get arrested leaving poor Juana, and Coyotito by themselves. His brother told him to be strong and to remember their ancestors who were cheated long ago. Kino understood and continued squinting his eyes.

When the Indians started to market their pearls in a group they never got their money back even though they would give the seller his fair share. So they were taken advantage of because this happened twice before the idea wasn’t idealistic. The only reason the fishermen’s wanted sell their pearls outside of their city was too get more money for their pearl. Doing that was against religious rules so said the Father. The father said, “That god has sent a woman or man to guard something of the universe and whoever goes against it will be in danger of the assault of hell.” So losing those pearl were a punishment by the ones who left their station.

The town is not literally "infected" with poison. Steinbeck compared poison to greed and jealousy, all the evils of what money can bring. I think Steinbeck used this phrase to show how the people in the town were "sick" with selfishness and how everyone wanted the pearl for their own needs. Everyone in the village were not used to people having a lot of money, so when Kino came home with the struck of luck, finding the pearl, everyone wanted their own share. People were trying to figure out ways to get money out of Kino. I'm sure most people in the village, are untrustworthy people.

They all read into Kino’s discovery by thinking of themselves and their advantage of having the pearl. They all thought they would get the money that came from the pearl but they never thought about Kino and his family. The shopkeeper thought that Kino would buy the suits that he has been waiting to be sold. The doctor saw the opportunity to receive and enormous fortune by curing Coyotito. The beggars saw that they would receive the fortune because they believed that Kino would give back because he his thankful. The pearl buyer took advantage of the size by saying it was to big so it was fake. Everyone’s thoughts were unfair to Kino because they only thought about themselves.

When Coyotito was bitten by the scorpion, venom was sent through his body. This is similar to when Kino and Juana found the pearl that soon affected not only them but the people around them. For example, the people in Kino’s town knew him as a kind man who normally wouldn’t do something that would cause problems. When the pearl is found and Kino has it in his possession, he starts acting very gluttonous. People notice his change in character which causes them to want the pearl. Eventually, the pearl caused the town as a whole to fall apart. The pearl at first seemed harmless, as if it was just a beautiful treasure but it later acted like a poison that infected the entire town.

Coyotito and the town were both infected with a poison. The poison in Coyotito is a scorpion’s but the town is not infected with a physical poison. The town is filled with greed, and Kino’s perfect pearl is the cause of it. Kino realizes that the pearl is the cause of it and wants to hurry and sell it to pass on the evil to someone else. The pearl buyers show some greed when they are secretly trying to lower the price on Kino’s pearl down to next to nothing.

When I hear this i think that the poison the town was infected with was greed. Since everybody knew that Kino had the pearl, they all wanted it for themselves, which brought everybody to their bad side. Even the dealers got in on it. They tried to rip Kino off by offering him a low price for the expensive pearl. The doctor also took part. Poisoning Coyotito just to get the pearl as payment is very low. Trying to kill someone else's baby just for money isn't cool. Hopefully this will all blow over for Kin and Juana. Especially for his little Coyotito.

What is the significance of squinting the eyes?

RE: Everyone has a certain "wall" that they put up around others whether the reason be for preventing any kind of hurt, understanding, or whatever it may be. The doctor in the beginning got to Kino by refusing him clearly stating he was not an equal to the doctor. Instead of showing any type of anger to the pearl buyers he sets a very hard exterior and this is his "wall". With this, they can not see he is affected and they can't upset him. It is basically his safety net as opposed to real feelings. I think it comes from the animal instinct of wanting to be wary around others or to try and intimidate another animal. Or, at least, this is how I understood it.

DANA JOHNSON said...

The significance of the squinting of the eyes is that it somewhat protects the people following. Nothing can break this wall. It was something that their fathers and their great grandfathers had done to while the strangers with arguments and gunpowder and authority had that. It was a thing that showed the other people of the town that even though they highly looked down on, they were not afraid of them. And apparently it had some significance because the other people apparently were not afraid to stand behind the two.

Everybody seems to want the pearl and they would certainly take advantage of any chance that appeared to take the pearl from Kino. The pearl has done something bad to Kino because Kino doesn't really seem to notice all the negative thoughts and people going around him.

I believe that the town was infected with poison because of the pearl. The very existence of the pearl was overwhelming. People in the town became very interested in the pearl and jealousy and ignorance arose. Also, Kino became very over protective of the pearl which may cause problems in the future. In chapter four, Kino is attacked in the night by someone who I assume intended on stealing the pearl. All this negative energy was caused by the pearl. I believe Steinbeck used this as a metaphor for that reason.

With his discovery of the pearl and the word of this fascinating discovery traveling through the small town has everyone’s eyes turned to Kino’s pearl. The author says that the town is infected with a poison like Coyotito was; this could mean that they have been tempted with the thought of greed or theft. The people in the town are now influenced with the pearls beauty and value of it that they may do anything to get it for themselves. The poison could also mean that people are worried or scared of what could come of Kino’s procession of the pearl and how it might lead to conflicts within the town. Coyotito was poisoned by a scorpion sting. This was a real poison that affected him phisically. When it says the town was poisoned, they do not mean it literally. They mean that the town has been corrupted by the pearl. People become jealous of Kinos good fortune, and they plot against him. Kino senses this when he starts to hear the song of evil, but he refuses to give in. Juana also senses this evil and wants Kino to destroy the pearl before it corrupts them.

When Steinbeck says a lot can be learned about a man by the tilt of his hat he means that the tilt of the hat can affect an opinion that one gets about such man. A tilt can show how educated or knowing one is because it is different for different classes. Education, in turn often means having money. If one seems to have a façade and the tilt of a hat, it is assumed that they are educated and have money. I am assuming, most people of lower classes are reluctant to this because in often times they have neither to little of no money or education.

As for the town being infected with a disease like Coyotito is, it's not meant to be literal, it's a metaphor for how greed and selfishness is spreading throuh the town like a disease on a person.
