This chapter was nothing but a dirty trick. This entire chapter shows is how deep a person’s greed can be. Kino killed in self defense, and the same people burned down their house. This was a very evil thing to do, and it all started because they wanted to save their son. It is amazing how this whole thing has started. This pearl has brought the family nothing but grief and pain. If Kino knew what was good for his family, he would have sold if for the one thousand pesos.

I did not like this chapter. This is the chapter where everything falls apart; their life starts to unravel. It's all because of the pearl and the evil it brought into the inhabitants of La Paz. I wish Kino had just listened to Juana and let her throw the pearl back into the sea. Instead, he chases after her, hits her, and kicks her! That made me really mad. It shows how the pearl changed Kino because I'm pretty sure that Kino never would have hit Juana before. The people of the town have become really low. First, they ransacked his house, undoubtedly looking for the pearl. They also ruined his canoe, which is the lowest anyone can go- worse than killing a man. Then, they tried to attack Kino. Acting in self defense, Kino killed the attacker. Lastly, they set his brush house on fire. This was a sad chapter..

In chapter five Kino wakes up seeing his wife move around the house very silently even he could barely hear her move the rocks around the fire and when she went outside he followed her. Kino seeing her fasten her pace runs full speed,catches her hand,grabs the pearl, punches her and kicks her; he also left her on the beach. After beating his wife he is jumped by black figures, he in self defense kills one and the other flees and he also lost his pearl. Juana walking back to her house saw the pearl and hesitates if she should finish her job, but doesn’t. She sees her husband and another figure lying down, she runs to her husband and he tells her he has lost the pearl, but she tells him she has it, she then tell her husband that he has killed a man, so he tells his wife to grab Coyotito and all their corn from the house. After Juana returning they went and hid out at his brother’s house without his brother noticing, but his sister in law coming in to switch hats was told by Kino to get his brother and say nothing of them after his brother came, the next day after receiving supplies from his brother they leave, to go up north.

I didn’t really like this chapter. It was dark and depressing. It showed the real side of Kino’s interest in the pearl. He wanted to sell the pearl for it’s full value. He wanted the money. It also shows how greedy people could get over money and material things.

This chapter is very dark and scary. Kino sees Juana leave the house, so he follows her. Since she leaves he gets very enraged. When he finds her, he gets the pearl from her and begans to beat on her. After he kicked her, his emotions took over and he just left her there at the beach. After walking for a while, he begins to get mugged by a dark figure, since it was dark. then, Kino begins to fight back and stabs the figure with the knife. Kino gets knocked to the ground and the person begins to search him for the pearl. Still by the sea, Juana realizes that she is not mad at Kino because she says "he is a man: half insane, half god." She then gets up on her knees, cleans her bruised face with stinging sea water, and goes to follow Kino. As she is getting close, she watches kino get mugged from a distance. Juana finds and get the pearl, pondering if she should go back to the beach and finished what she started. She decides not to do it and rushes over to help Kino. She realizes that the family she once had, before the pearl, was a thing of the past and she has to live in reality, what is happening now. She tells Kino that they have to leave the village because he killed a man. He told her to go get Coyotito and he'd get a canoe for transportation. As soon as Kino get the canoe, he sees a hole and he begins to get outraged again. As soon as he starts heading back to the house, he sees smoke in the air and knows that his house is on fire. he panics and runs really fast to his house. he sees a dark figure running toward him, and it's Juana. She tells him that it was "the dark ones." Kino takes Juana into the shadows because the light has become an enemy for him.

Questions: Does Kino care more about the pearl, than his wife Juana? I mean, he chases her down, punches her in the face and kicks her just for a pearl. Why does Juana still stay with Kino, when she could take Coyotito and run off? Juana gets beat up, just for a pearl, and she still sticks with him, knowing that Kino was going to do anything to keep the pearl safe. Who were the people who burned down Kino’s house and broke his canoe? I thought it was the doctor’s men, who tried to keep Kino and his family from escaping.

Evaluate: This chapter is when everything falls apart; everything is reveled about Kino and his family, like Elexis said. This chapter is a sad chapter because the reader gets to see the other side of Kino; the side the pearl created. Kino hears faint movement in their home and sees that it is his wife. She seems to be looking for the pearl. Juana moves outside with Kino following. When Juana hears Kino following behind here, she speeds up to a dead run. She is headed for the ocean. Kino builds up anger, which doesn’t mean a good sign. Kino has so much anger that he knocks his wife to the ground, making her drop the pearl. I think that was the wrong way to handle the situation. He should have told her what he wanted to do and how it would help their family. When he arrived back to his home there was a man that attacked Kino. Kino ended up killing the man to save his own life. I don’t think that was the correct way to save his own life. Now people will be searching for Kino and his family to see what has happened. Kino going to his brother’s house was not a good idea. Kino can now get his brother into a lot of trouble too. In this chapter, Kino didn’t make the right decisions for the situations he was in. Now he is going to have some tough consequences. The pearl has brought evil to everyone in the village and town. Like Juan Tomas said, “There is a devil in this pearl.”

In the beginning of this chapter Juana had awaken earlier then Kino for a purpose. She was focused on throwing the pearl back to the sea. She was unaware that Kino was awake. I find Kino’s actions unreasonable though. He shouldn’t have struck Juana. She had done nothing wrong. She had just thought of their family’s well being. After Juana’s reaction surprised me. She was not mad and held no anger toward him. I would have been so angry and hit him back. She forgave him though. Kino on the other hand was being ambushed. Kino struck with his knife and killed the man though he was not aware at first. Juana soon came to his aide and grabbed the pearl once again thinking again whether or not to throw it in the sea while she could. She helped her husband and dragged the body into their house. The house was in flames after awhile and Juana, Coyotito, and Kino hid in his brother’s house. Telling the wife to call for his brother and to not tell anyone they were there. His brother agreed to help but for a day. He could not endanger his own family all for the sake of his brother of course.

This chapter began with Kino waking up to the sound of Juana leaving with the pearl to the sea. When Juana was about to throw the pearl to the ocean, Kino caught her and began beating Juana up and left her with bruises. On the way back Kino approached a shadowy figure and they began to fight until Kino stabbed the shadowy figure in the neck. Juana still stood by Kino’s side even though Kino had beaten her up because after Kino had killed the shadowy figure, Juana went towards Kino to clean him. They both knew that they would be accused of killing a person so they planned their escape, but before they had time their house was burned, Kino’s canoe was broken, and the people were beginning to wake up. They went to hide with Juan Tomas and he helped them get packed and ready to escape in the night. Kino still didn’t want to give up the pearl because he said that it was part of his soul even though it had caused many problems for Kino.

At the beginning of chapter five Kino wakes up to find Juana trying to sneak out to get rid of the pearl. He stops Juana from throwing the pearl into the ocean just in time and starts to walk away. As soon as he is the path back to his hut someone attacks him and tries to search him. Kino stabs and kills his attacker and realizes that he needs to take the pearl and flee the town before anyone realizes that the man is dead. To stop Kino from getting away someone has cut a hole in his canoe and searched, and burned his house. He goes to his brother’s house to wail until night to flee. When night finally comes Kino, Juana and Coyotito flee leave the town on foot headed for the capitol.

I actually sort of did like this chapter. This is where we see the real Kino. Juana wakes up and tries to throw away the pearl and he chases after her. He throws her to the ground and kicks her. She knew he was like this deep down. So Kino went back home and he was attacked. So he killed the attacker. Juana started to get scared and said that they had to run because the people would be chasing them after what Kino had said to them at the pearl market the other day. So he agreed and they ran to Kinos older brother and he hid them till the next night. His brother asked why he didn’t get rid of the pearl and Kino simply replied “this pearl has become my soul, if I give it up I shall loose my soul.” That shows how greedy and consumed with the thought of wealth Kino can get.

In the beginning Juana tries to throw the pearl into the ocean because she probably feels that it is threatening her family and it will bring great sadness to all of them. When Kino see’s his wife going out to the shore he walks after her and they soon start a chase. Kino reaches Juana before she can throw it and pushes her away. Then, a man from the darkness comes and attacks Kino trying to get the Pearl, but Kino’s rage is unleashed and he kills the man in self-defense. They both realize that they have to leave the village before everyone thinks that they are evil people. When Juana goes to get Coyotito she is frightened by her hut catching on fire as soon as she leaves. The family is considered dead when they are really hiding out at Juan Thomas’ house until nightfall and then they will leave on foot for new land.

Chapter 5 was probably the darkest chapter of the whole book. Some of the accents making it dark would be that when Juana is trying to destroy the pearl and Kino follows her and beats her. This is an example of how evil this tiny object is. It has Kino to turn to greed, violence, and very self kept. Another dark deed is that Kino kills a man! Even though Juana has been abused by her husband, she realizes she needs him and she still needs to be loyal to him. Therefore, she grabs the pearl that Kino dropped. She alerts her husband that they need to flee and hide. In the meanwhile, some of the "dark figures" burn down his house. Since their canoe is broken and their house is burned down, they must stay with his brother.

I did not like this chapter at all. Before daylight Kino heard Juana get up. He knew she had taken the pearl. He quietly got up and followed her. SHe was about to throw the pearl into the ocean when Kino got her hand and brought her down to the floor. He punched her and kicked her. To me that is just wrong, he was willing to hit his wife just to save a pearl. After that he didn't tell her nothing and just left. Juana didn't tell him anything eithe and i understand why she didn't. When Kino got back to his house another man atacked him again and in seld defense Kino killed the man. When Juana got back she saw what Kino had done and knew it was best to leave. But when Kino went to go see his canoe he saw it had a hol in it. When he went back to his house he saw it was on fire. So they hid the body and went into his brother's house. His brother helped him to escape. So Kino, Juana, and the Coyotito left the town.

This chapter was by far the most engaging, yet horrible chapter of all. Everything came tumbling down and finally greed and violence took over. In the beginning, you read about how Kino is awaken by a nearby motion. He wakes to find that Juana is creeping towards the fireplace, where she quietly gathers the pearl and sneaks out of the house. As she heads towards the beach she hears Kino behind her then breaks for a run. As soon as she starts running, Kino catches her punches her in the face then kicks her in the stomach then grabs the pearl. As Kino makes his way back to the house he is attacks by a group of men, Kino then ends ups murdering one of them. Kino and Juana resolve to flee and rush back to their brush house. When they go out to their boat, Kino realizes that someone has punched a hole in the bottom of the boat. He decides to go back to the house when he realizes that someone has burned down the house, Juana then confirms this. These are pretty much the main events of this chapter which prove how hectic, violent, and greedy Kino has become all because of the Pearl.

In chapter five Juana was about to get rid of the pearl because she believed it brought misfortune to her family’s life. Kino saw her and was barely there to stop this. Kino was then attacked; he fought back and killed a man in self defense. Kino knew he had to go but he couldn’t because his canoe was damaged. Kino burned his home down with the man’s body inside and asked his brother for protection. Kino then said goodbye to his brother and set off with Juana and Coyotito to some cities in the north. I believe Kino will settle in a new city and might have the opportunity to sell the pearl for a great price.

In this chapter, people who wanted the pearl came and tried to rob Kino. However, they didn't know that Juana had the pearl to throw it out into the sea because it has brought nothing but evil to her family. And when Kino found out, he was angry, and he beat her up. She knew that this was going to happen, and she accepted the difference between men and women. Anyway, while they were fighting, people went to Kino's house and ransacked the house. They didn't find it, and a man went out to attack Kino, and Kino killed him. The people burned his house down. I agree with Juana. They should just destroy it, because it is causing them so much trouble than it is going to help them. Kino wants to believe that, but he only sees the positive side of it. And now that their house is burned down, and they are hiding with Kino's brother, hopefully, the violence in the village will die down, and no one will find the body.

In this chapter, Kino wakes up to small noises triggered by his wife escaping their hut. Juana walks out the door not knowing Kino was awake and starts off towards the shore. Then Juana hears something behind her and starts running. Juana knows it is her husband behind her coming for the pearl that she has stolen from him. Once Juana got to the shore she cocked her arm back only to be smashed in the face by Kino fist. Juana fell on the ground only to be kicked in the side and to have the pearl stolen from her hand. After that scene, Kino headed back to his house but sensed that someone was watching him so he hid the pearl behind a rock and sprung into the bush with his knife ready slash. As Juana got the strength to get up, she headed back to her house and noticed the pearl shining under the rock. So she went to pick up the pearl and noticed Kino and another figure in the bush. When Kino stepped out he explained that he had killed someone that was following him. Now Kino and Juana planed to get out of the town because there was a lot of trouble coming their way.

It took me a second to understand what was happening, but at the beginning of the chapter where Kino hurts Juana, it disturbed me. I had a feeling something like this would happen, because Kino was growing very protective and paranoid, but I didn't expect this. It also kind of upset me that Juana wasn't angry with him for it, that she "expected" it. Also, I don't understand why it is that she gave him the pearl back once she found it. He believed that he had lost it, and she wanted rid of it so much, so why give it back? With all that is happening to Kino and his family,I found it rather nice that his brother took him in. I knew, though, that that would hardly have solved his problems, this stuff wasn't just going to stop. For the next chapter, I'm expecting the conclusion won't exactly be a happy ending.

Despite the many opinions of the other readers, I love this chapter, mainly because Kino finally realizes what Juana has known all along: The pearl is, blatantly, bad. The pearl, symbolizes greed, and that was probably what Steinbeck intended it to be. Kino, in his greedy state, was so protective of the pearl that he beat his wife, despite the fact that, in any other state of mind, he would never do this. The pearl has brought nothing but grief to their once happy simple family, and it was unfortunate that he had to realize the power of the pearl would only be their downfall so late. The pearl has caused Kino to kill a man, he is on the run, and he has forced his family into the very thing he feared for them. Greed can change a man, and Kino now realizes this, and to quote something I heard in a movie (and I know Haylee from 6th period will love this because it’s from Spiderman), “With great power, comes great responsibility.”

Chapter five is a suspenseful chapter. I am very disappointed in Kino for hitting his wife. If Kino had listened to Juana, the evil would have never reached them. It was very wise of Juana to take the pearl back, but she was too slow and the evil has begun. In page 60 it states the beginning of the evil that has taken over Kino’s family, “she sank to her knees and picked it up, and the moon went into the darkness of the clouds again.” The ending of this story is not going to be good. Kino has turned greedy and crazy. Instead of protecting the pearl, he should protect his family. Juana and Coyotito are worth more than all the money that pearl is worth.

In Chapter 5, everything normal that’s happened in Kino and Juana’s life begins to fall apart. The Chapter begins when Kino wakes up to the sound of Juana arising from their sleeping mat. He watched her quietly take care of Coyotito and leaps up as she leaves the house, knowing that something is wrong immediately. He races after her to as far as the beach and runs faster as he sees her trying to throw the pearl she had taken into the sea. He stops her just in time and, infuriated, he begins beating her viciously. As soon as the beating are done Kino, takes the pearl back to his home only to be attacked by a mysterious unknown person trying to take the pearl from him. Kino fights and accidently in self defense kills the figure, which turns out to be a man. When Juana comes back, recovering slowly from the beating, she finds her husband in shock, blood on his knife. She goes to him; thinking slightly about grabbing the pearl and throwing it back into the sea, but ignores it and takes care of Kino. She tells him that he has killed a man, and they decide to flee, knowing that people would find the body and soon be after them. Kino and Juana go to his brother, seeking temporary shelter there, and leave for the north in the morning.

Well what happens in chapter 5 is that Kino is awakened by something in the dark and realizes that it is Juana. Juana is digging up the pearl to destroy it and once Kino find out he runs after her to get the pearl back. Just as Juana is about to throw the pearl into the sea Kino jumps and grabs her arm to take the pearl from her. Once he has the pearl he punches and kicks Juana for doing that and walks off to the beach. While he is walking he is attacked and he finally gets the guy with the knife killing the attacker but Kino loses the pearl. While Kino was attacked Juana was walking to the beach and finds the pearl on the ground and sees Kino standing while the guy was on the ground. They plan to run off so they both get ready but Kino’s boat is damaged and his house burned down so they look for help from Kino’s brother Juan Thomas. Since their house burned down people think they died from the flames but nobody died so now Juan Thomas is spreading rumors about Kino leaving during the incident.

Kino runs after Juana and grabs the pearl but not before punching and kicking Juana. Kino leaves Juana and retreats back to the house where he is attacked by two black figures. In Kino's defense he kills one of the mean while the other sets fire to is home. Juana came back up the beach to their home where she finds Kino laying on the ground. Juana found the pearl on the ground and gave it back to Kino and then went into the house to grab Coyotito. The family then went to hide in Kino's brother's house until night when they could escape. Juan Thomas told Kino and Juana to "Follow God," before thy left to go North.

In chapter 5, two things show their bad side, Kino and the pearl. When Kino finds out that Juana was ready to throw the pearl in the sea, he hits her, leaving her badly bruised. Kino also ends up killing a man. Their house is also burned down to the ground. In this chapter, Kino ended up losing more than he could ever gain. He shows his greedy side that leaves his own family in the darkness. Juana is hurt because his own husband hit him and she loses some respect for him. Coyotito is in a bad shape because of the sting.

When they return home, they find there house on fire. Kino then turns to his brother for help. They decide Kino will leave during the next night and head tword the north.

Chapter Five: The Pearl
Evaluate: In chapter five of The Pearl, it starts out with a conflict between Kino and Juana fighting over the pearl, and weather or no to sell it or to get rid of it forever. In the story, Juana attempts to make a run for it with the pearl in her hand to through it into the ocean, but before she can do it, Kino catches up with her. In fierce anger it takes the pearl and beats Juana, and heads back to the house. On his way back he is confronted by a person hidden in the shadows and attacks him in attempt to steel the pearl. Kino with his fast reactions cuts the attackers throat and looses the pearl in a pile of rocks. Juana following behind him finds the pearl and sneaks it away. Back home, Juana begins to worry about Kino’s actions on the beach, and worries about the safety of their lives and Coyotito’s. In a desperate act to run away, Kino sets up a scene that will trick the people into believing that they are dead, but fails because their means of transport is damaged and has only one alternative plan up his sleeve. Their plan is to have Kino’s brother hide them from the town’s people so that they can keep safe, and keep people from having the pearl in their lives and from becoming greedy as they have become because of the pearl.

In chapter 5 everything seemed to be going wrong. Kino became a very evil person to me when he beat his wife, because in my eyes all his wife was trying to do was to have everything go back to the way it used to be. Kino is become very greedy and not acting very rationally, he doesn't seem to think things through. In the book it said how he was an animal, and i agree because he beat his wife, killed a man, and still only cared for the pearl. Kino knew that he and his family couldn't stay there anymore, so he told Juana to get the baby and take some corn so they could leave. They find there house being burned from the outside and Juana said she noticed things were turned, which obviously meant that someone went through the house looking for something, like the pearl. By the end of the chapter Kino and his family are left with nothing, and forced into hiding with his brother.

Chapter 5:
I think this chapter really shows what the pearl really meant to Kino. I think that kino should have just taken the 1,000 pesos. And the whole horrible ending would have turned out very different. I also think that he should have just let Juana throw the pearl back into the ocean because it just brought bad luck to the whole family. I also belive that this chapter shows how greedy people can be and it also shows what such great wealth can do to somebody. Overall this chapter was just bad luck!

In this chapter Juana is awoken by "noise" that she hears,But as soon as she ran out Kino knew. Juana had stole the pearl to throw it into the sea, but Kino catches her in time and beats her up for it. After he gets it back he goes back to the house. He is then attcked yet another time for the pearl. The intruders always come out at night and try to steal the pearl from Kino while he is sleeping. But as always Kino always digs his knife into his enemy, but this time he kills the thief. The rest of the guys that were trying to steal the pearl burn down their house. Kino then goes to his brother's house and tells him that he is going to run to the next town.

Chapter 5, is a huge turning point in the story, everything seems to go wrong in this chapter. At the beginning, Kino awakes finding that his wife has awoken and is going to throw the pearl out into the sea. He attacks her, and takes the pearl back inside. But just before he reaches there hut, a man attacks him. Kino stabs the attacker,and kills him. He lays on the ground half conscious. Juana rushes to his side and tends to his wounds, even after he attacked her from taking the pearl. They both decide to leave in there canoe, only to find a huge hole in the bottom of it. I predict one of them will die in the next chapter. I wish Juana had just thrown the pearl in the ocean after Kino was injured from the attacker. Now the lives are falling apart.

Chapter Five-
Gosh, I hate this chapter. Kino and his family’s life are pretty much in turmoil by now. First, Kino beats Juana in her attempts to get rid of what seems to be a cursed pearl. Second, Kino murders a man. Third, he and his family try to escape persecution and of course they failed. Fourth, the family canoe has been vandalized, which was their only hopes in fleeing. And lastly, their house gets burned down. This chapter is defiantly a major turning point in the story. Kino loses his respect for others and he doesn’t acknowledge the fact that he went so low as to kill a fellow human-being. He absolutely and clearly isn’t the same person he was at the beginning of the story.

In this chapter, Kino is awoken by Juana who is trying to sneak out of their house to throw the pearl out into the sea. But luckiy, Kino catches her in time to save the pearl. The reason Juana did this was because she thought the pearl was bringing evil into her family. When in reality, it was. But as soon as Kino gets his pearl back, he is attacked by another mysterious person trying to steal his pearl. But this time, his knife does not miss and he kills the thief. Now he and his family must flee far away so that he is not arrested.

This chapter is when everything goes wrong. The pearl has been a danger to the family. It has posessed Kino into becoming greedy and making the pearl the most important thing in his life. Kino hears Juana's footsteps as she goes to the ocean and is about to dump the pearl. But Kino chases after her and punches her in the face and kicks her. He then goes back home then someone tried to get him but Kino ends up killing him. Then Kino and his family go to Juan Tomas's house to run away. Juan tells him that he should've gotten rid of the pearl. But kino says that he will not get rid of it.

Juana tries to get rid of the pearl into the ocean. Kino follows her to the beach and takes the pearl away, the he beats her up and leaves her there. They both must flee because Kino has killed a man that attacked him. The town thinks that they are dead because of the house fire. However, they are hiding out in the house of their friend Tomas. They try to escape, but are only successful on the second night.

In this chapter everything pretty much goes down hill. Kino woke up to Juana trying to take the pearl and throw it back into the ocean. He ended up beating her just to get his pearl back. When Kino was heading back to his house, some men jumped him. They were after the pearl too. All of these actions were out of greed. In the end Kino ended up killing one man in self-defense. I wasn't to fond of this chapter. Most of it didn't make sense at first. I had to go back over it and read it multiple times to get what the author was saying.
